Surprised nobody has mentioned this in here ;)
Upgraded my 9.10 to 10.04 alpha the other day, I'm impressed. Especially happy that the ALSA module has been updated, now plays nice with Teamspeak 3.
Wasn't a fan of the theme or the button controls on the left, but you can change that in gconf-editor.
+1 rep to Canocial, I'm sure the actual release (April 29th) will be much better ;)

Lucid is definitely the better choice.

So far I have experienced one minor bug, my screen flickers a bit when entering and exiting a fullscreen game. Seems anything openGL related.

Are you using the Nouveau drivers or the proprietary Nvidia driver (assuming of course that you have an Nvida card).

I installed it on my test machine today, on the promise from a ZDnet discussion that it's much faster booting than 9.10. Sadly that's not my experience, takes easily 3 or 4 times as long to boot up after GRUB.

But what was the end result? I haven't tried it yet. Does the Aero effect work as promised?

Just tried it. Oh heck no! Runs hot as hell! Thought my poor laptop was going to burst into flames.. quick shut down. I have never experienced this before in any OS. For me, 10.04 is a freaking disaster. To quote comic book guy "Worst 'nix distro EVER". Stay far away from the beta IMO.

When I say quick shut down, I mean, I DID! Not the computer or OS. It was freaking me out.. fan blowing harder than I have ever heard it, just booting!! I have gamed on this laptop under Windows, and I run Mint 8 on it.. no issues.. but holy mother of you know what.. just booting Ubuntu 10.04 sent my machine into turbo fan mode, blowing out enormous heat. Heck no. No other 'nix distro does this. Bad.. bad 'buntu. :(

Let's not forget it's still in Beta.

I had the same issue with BackTrack/Mint8 until I installed... darn I forget the app now. Once I installed it really helped keep the machine cool, I wanna say it was "ksensor" (I run kde btw). Ya and I know what you mean, I thought my laptop was going to burst into flames. Until I had things scale back on CPU and fan control.

I've gone back to 9.10. Lucid had a huge memory hole on my machine it would lock up after anywhere between 20 & 30 mins. dependent on what I was doing. Mostly I was trying to download applications. Ran 9.10 overnight downloading and installing updates and no issues the next morning.

When I reinstalled 9.10 it automatically upgraded to Lucid LTS and so far, no memory issues, Fingers crossed.

Yeah, 10.04 has been working well for me for some time now. Everything seems to be corrected from the first Beta. I like it. :)

Just a couple of warnings to people when upgrading to a new version of Linux (any distro) upgrade your BIOS, there are issues where certain hardware items (fans) would not work properly after upgrading, most times a bios update will be available if it is a know issue. Also there is a know new bug when upgrading from older versions of ubuntu to new 10.04 you may get kernel panics, i have upgraded on 3 machines now have gotten issues on 2, hopefully its been corrected but if you get a torrented version it may not have this fix. But other then those issues this is a HUGE improvement over pervious releases, the social media integration is amazing, don't really like the way they switched the exit and minimize buttons over to left hand side (sorta feels like there ripping off Mac). the new IM they have is amazing. Great upgrade considering this will be one of there "long-term" support releases. New theme is really usable and polished looking. Upgrades to software center is also a welcome upgrade.

One that I have found a fix kinda for is mounting USB drives. The BIG one I'm trying to fix now is that it's trying to upgrade my database to a new schema and for some reason at one time I had my NAS mount and it did a scan for ALL my files on it and index. Now that it wants to update my DB to a new version it's running in the background a new HASH for THOUSANDS of files will take days to do this.
At first I thought this toasted my DB. Because it wasn't doing anything for hours.

Live TV HD def isn't smooth anymore, it's pixelating and buffering ALOT. Unwatchable.

I'm still playing with it.

Just put in a reply to your thread there. Make sure you have a good full backup of the db before you do anything :). I've done all kinds of crazy SQL stuff with my database over the years using Toad for MySql (from windows), and had a few times where I just restored my db backup when I really screwed it :).

Thanks. I have tons of backups :) I wasn't sure where this info was stored.

I've a developer so I'm ok with SQL.

I'll reply to your message there as well but for now. I can't hit "M" to scan again because I can't get into Mythvideo, it wont let me in until I upgrade the DB. So I will have to zap the table manually.

I haven't tried Jamu but I have been using a script that I ran to find all the info for my tv shows like "two and half men.s01e02.avi" does a very good job. Does Jamu do that as well?

uncle hammy

Jamu is installed as part of MythTV since 0.22, so I suspect you'll be using it whether you know it or not. It does a very good job of downloading info (as well as Fanart, Coverart, etc) for TV shows, Videos, etc.

Digiital

Odd, I have only noticed it in .23

Does it auto run when you do a scan?

uncle hammy

It's a cron job, cron.weekly and cron.monthly I think the it's called "mythvideo". In Mythbuntu 10.04, you can configure some of it's options from the MCC. I believe there is a separate script that runs when you do "Download MetaData" from within MythVideo.

Well that did the trick, cleaned up the videometa and a few seconds later my upgrade was done! Thanks for the heads up.
