View Full Version : Win 7 Networking problem
Win XP Pro computer acting as server. Can't see my new Win 7 laptop on the XP Pro but can see the xp Pro computer on my laptop. All set to workgroup. I must be missing something as there was no problem seeing the old XP laptop. All folders on the XP Pro are shared as before but I can no longer access them.
New laptop is configured as a USER on the XP Pro machine as before.
Thanks,

Start by turning off the firewall on the win 7 machine. Fire walls are the biggest problem when trying to see what is on the network.
Windows Firewall was turned off. Update - I can see all the computers on the Network as well as all the shared files on the XP system, however, cannot access any of the shared folders from the Win xp machine. The win xp machine does not see the Win 7 laptop. Win 7 laptop is listed as a user on the XP machine. Any assistance anyone can provided would be very much appreciated. I believe I am working in circles and not making much progress.

IMO, have you shared files between Windows Vista and Win XP before? You can share files in Windows 7 the same way...
Enable sharing for the folder, Add permissions to access the folder. In some cases you may need to specifiy the name of the user to access the folder.
In this case add the user "Everyone" and anyone can access it or the desired user name.
It may be easier to share files using the "Public" folder on Windows 7 if your still have network sharing problems or if you don't want to change settings regarding your network.
Windows 7 Sharing checklist
Make sure your windows 7 PC is set to a Home network zone and not "Pubic".
Turn on Network discovery - Network and Sharing Center - Advanced sharing settings
Good luck.
