My toilet tank sprung a leak and now I need to replace it. But I do not want to buy a whole new set of toilet so I just want to replace the tank. Do the size/position of the screws from where the tank goes into the bowl standard for all toilets or differ from manufacture to manufacture?

Thanks

Yes they do differ from one to another. You most likely dont need to replace the tank on the back. See if you can simply replace the seal....much cheaper. Just be sure to follow the replacement diections or you could end up with a big mess.

What is causing the leak, or where is it...unless it is cracked you should be able to replace the seal where it is leaking...see http://www.onthehouse.com/qa/1648

I'm not certain of this but it may just as cheap to replace the whole toilet if the tank is cracked and it is an older model as the tank has to match the base or you are in real trouble.

most likely a rubber washer or gasket where the supply pipe is or the anchor bolts. gently but firmly tighten but do overtighten(may crack tank bottom. try this link http://doityourself.com/toilet/h2repairtoilet.htm

Look on the inside of the tank lid and you will find the model number of the toilet. Take this to your local box store and they can get you the proper replacement tank. But Ogee makes a good point....find out where the leak is coming from first.....a little food colouring in the tank water will help find the location of the leak.

Sorry, i forgot to specify. The leak is coming from a crack in the tank. So I will have to replace the whole toilet tank.

As Walter posted, look for model info on the bottom of the lid... you'll need to get the tank for that model toilet....
If you can't get a replacement (too old), you'll have to replace the whole thing... :(

Good Luck
