View Full Version : Finding a Good Video Card to use with Ubuntu

I have used ATI video cards forever-and-a-day. No real problems with my XP setup and once I had the proprietary driver from ATI, I could use the GPU on it to speed things up in Ubuntu... However, ATI does not offer a working driver for the in-build GPU on the my motherboard (I believe it's a Radeon 2100), so any graphics in Ubuntu requiring 3d rendering now crawls along at a snails pace. (like the Molecule screen saver or TuxKart)

In a month or two, I want to get a new video card that (for the first time) will probably not be from ATI. I do some gaming on my Windows setup, mostly the Half-Life saga and Portal, so whatever the card may be it should give me a performance equal to or better than the Radeon 2100 AND have 3d graphics support in Ubuntu.

Any suggestions on what I should get? My budget is $120 or less and it (of course) should work perfectly with XP.

(Oh yeah... My current MB is an ASUS M2A74-AM)

Thanks!

Nvidia for Linux works best. If you're not a gamer go for 8xxx or 9xxx series, if you're a gamer, go for the higher cards 2xx, 3xx or 4xx series.

Take a look at some of the cards here - http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index5.aspx?lang=en-us and you will see that Nvidia supports linux.
