Microsoft on Wednesday released a new controller for its upcoming Xbox 360 device which also works with PCs.

The Xbox 360 Controller for Windows will work with the upcoming Xbox 360 console, as well as with computers that have the Windows XP operating system.

"Gamers can simply unplug their controller from their Xbox 360 system and plug it into their Windows XP-based PC," Chris Donahue, director of Windows gaming at Microsoft, said in a statement. "This is a great breakthrough for the gaming industry as we make it easier for developers to create multiplatform titles."

Microsoft Common Controller Driver is a new game input standard that is used for both the Xbox360 console and for Windows XP SP1 and above. The Xbox360 controller or any controllers that utilizes this standard will enable the device to be used on Windows also. This Redist Package includes the driver for IHVs to redist with their hardware. For the most current APIs of the Microsoft Common Controller, please download the lasted DX SDK. These APIs are called Xinput APIs.

Finally, I don't know why it took this long, we should have been able to use both xbox and playstation controllers with PCs a long long time ago. There 'how to' sites that will show how to convert on on your own so it should have been easy to come up with an adapter.

That is pretty powerfull, ever further attracts developers to work with xbox because its easy to port the game to PC as well while at the same time minimize developement costs.
