A former software developer in Raleigh North Carolina has been sentenced to 100 years in prison after being convicted of child pornography and Toronto's internationally renowned sex crimes unit broke the case.

In December of 2003, the Child Exploitation Unit of the Toronto Police force came across more than 400 images of a young girl being abused. Through their investigations they were able to identify items from the backgrounds of the pictures. A girl scout uniform,a wristband from an amusement park and a school uniform eventually led police to locate where the girl lived and the school she attended. The unit then contacted the local police force who arrested Brian Schellenberger.

Seargent Paul Gillespie told 680News that this was some of the most disgusting pornography he has seen. "To bound and tie, torture, cut rape, force to sleep in a dog cage, that's what happened to this little girl" he said.

Schellenberger would photograph the attacks then post the pictures on the internet.

The 100 year sentence is far more than Schellenberger would have received in Canada. This is frustrating for Gillepsie, who told 680News, "I defy any normal person to think that this individual deserves one day less than a hundred years". He tortured this poor girl for months and months on ends. In Canada, a similar conviction would warrant only three to five years in prison".

Gillespie says that only through public outrage will force judges and politicians to hand out tougher sentences.

Isn't it odd that a "red" state hands out penalties that more generally reflect societies (and most members of this boards) revulsion with crimes of this nature?

Woo hoo, a hundred years is a step in the right direction! What people can get away with doing to children is outrageous and heartbreaking.

Woo hoo, a hundred years is a step in the right direction! What people can get away with doing to children is outrageous and heartbreaking. It's a good start on setting precedence for more realistic sentencing of crimes. Now let's see what can be done for murder and violent crimes. In fact, many convictions, for many different cimes, are nothing but a slap on the wrist of the offender. Right now most of these sentences are jokes.

I doubt tough sentences will deter child pornography, but when caught we won't have to worry about that individual again. "One down .. next!"

To appease the moralists, the jail time would be well worth funding.

As soon as criminals start getting real sentences, and coddling like 1/3 time served removed and other such tripe, crime will go down.

Who is anyone to decide who lives and who dies?
Seems to me that's what murderers are put in prison for.
