Hi there. I've got a possible hi-jacker or a virus on my PC.

I'm running Win 98, Internet Explorer ver 6.0

Whenever I start the internet, here's what happens:

1 My homepage changes to about:blank
2 An advertisment pops up right away
3 Strange processes are running in the background with names like:
ATLAL32
MFCXE32
JAVALO32

These are just example files. There's lots more.

**NOTE: The strange processes only run when the internet is launched.

When I check, most of the files are .exe files are are being placed in these folders:
c:\windows
c:\windows\system
c:\windows\temp

As I am writing this, there's a process running called ATLAL32.

Here's a screenshot of my c:\windows\system folder. The 2 highlighted
files are examples:
http://img121.imagevenue.com/loc12/th_35a_vir1.jpg (http://img121.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc12&image=35a_vir1.jpg)

Here's a screenshot of my startup (when I run msconfig):
http://img111.imagevenue.com/loc57/th_2b0_vir2.jpg (http://img111.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc57&image=2b0_vir2.jpg)

I ran spybot, rebooted, but I've got the same results.

Here's my hi-jack this log:

You've got a fair bit of spyware.
You're also running a very ancient version of HijackThis.
Get rid of it and use the new version instead.
Here 's link to an executable, which will set it up for you:
http://thespykiller.co.uk/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe

Before running hjt
Download the trial version of Counterspy.
Update it then scan with it.
http://www.sunbelt-software.com/

Run an online scan at housecall.
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

You can get rid of this right now (Nasty activex ):

I haven't done these yet:

Before running hjt
Download the trial version of Counterspy.
Update it then scan with it.
http://www.sunbelt-software.com/

Run an online scan at housecall.

HJT is not a magic bullet.
It does not scan the entire system, nor does it examine the contents of folders or files.
That's one reason why you should always run an anti-spyware and on-line virus scan first.

The infection you have mutates .
This entry from the first log C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\NTRR32.EXE has mutated to
C:\WINDOWS\IEGA32.EXE

There are more of them somewhere.
Which is yet another reason to run the scans suggested first.
--

This appears to be the old coolweb hijacker known as home search.
Whether this is exactly the old version or a newer variant, can't tell yet.
Run the scans, then reboot and post a new hjt log before starting to use removal tools.

I did a virus scan and a spyware scan and yes, it did find some stuff, so I let it clean what it found.

One thing the spyware scan found was kjnys.dll.

Actually that's not bad progress.

Download aboutbuster (5,1 is the most recent),
Download link:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/aboutbuster.html
Install it, run and update it. (there may not be any updates)
Then shutdown the computer.
Reboot into Safe mode and run the updated aboutbuster in safe mode.

Then scan with hjt.
Put a check beside these entries if present and click fix:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system\kjnys.dll/sp.html#51014
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system\kjnys.dll/sp.html#51014

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,(Default) = ,
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system\kjnys.dll/sp.html#51014

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Reboot normally.
Run aboutbuster a second time.
Scan with hjt and post that log.
--
Edit to add:
"One thing the spyware scan found was kjnys.dll."

Yeah that's good.
That's a malware file.
You can see it in those strange entries like:
res://C:\WINDOWS\system\kjnys.dll/sp.html#51014

If you want to try, you could
scan with hjt.
Put a check beside these
CLOSE your browser
Click fix

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
Then reboot and scan again,

Might work if the scans picked up the main malware.
If it doesn't work do the aboutbuster.

It's not all gone yet. :(

I checked for updates running AboutBuster, I had the latest files.

Here's the AB log file in safe mode, first time running:

I thought I was homefree after this point...

I started the internet, but it seems (like you said) the malware keeps "mutating."
It almost seems like everytime I start the internet, the hourglass appears
(which means it's loading some type of spyware or malware in the background), an advertisment
pops up, then when you check what processes are running, it's another strange name.
This time the process running is called c:\windows\system\ADDEW32.exe

I ran AB again in safe mode, this is what it found:

AboutBuster 5.1, reference file 32
Scan started on [10/30/05] at [10:46:37 PM]
------------------------------------------------
Streams(ADS) not scanned: System not NTFS
------------------------------------------------
Removed File! : C:\WINDOWS\mqefe.dat
Removed File! : C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\buffu.dll
------------------------------------------------
Scan was COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY at 10:47:35 PM

It seems like C:\WINDOWS\mqefe.dat keeps installing itself again (even after a reboot.)

So, I ran hjt again, fixed the ones you said and rebooted again.

Do you know how I can offically get rid of this nasty malware and
stop it from mutating? These strange processes only get run when surfing the internet.
When I'm not surfing the internet (and I've killed the strange processes,) the computer is fine.
(I think.)

I missed this BHO the first time so

Put a check by these
close browser
Click fix

O2 - BHO: Class - {97881BDB-24FA-50B3-9B1A-0287619B4A8D} - C:\WINDOWS\NTCL.DLL

O15 - Trusted Zone: ww.master69.biz
O15 - Trusted Zone:ww.sgrunt.biz
O15 - Trusted Zone: ww.yeak.net

REboot,

Those trusted zone entries were placed by some nasty possibly Trojan QLowZones-15
* Reduces the IE browser zones to trust the following sites:
o ww.master69.biz
o ww.sgrunt.biz
o ww.yeah.net
* These are designed to modify the security settings of Internet Explorer by directly modifying the registry, then launching Internet Explorer to contact different websites.

These changes may result in the trojan downloading untrusted programs with the user's knowledge.

Thanx man. Once I got rid of these entries:

O2 - BHO: Class - {97881BDB-24FA-50B3-9B1A-0287619B4A8D} - C:\WINDOWS\NTCL.DLL

o ww.master69.biz
o ww.sgrunt.biz
o ww.yeah.net

I rebooted, now those strange processes don't run when I surf the net.

By far, the nastiest (and hardest) malware/spyware/virus to get rid of.

Do programs like hi-jack this, spybot or similar software need to be run safe mode or does it matter? Do you get different results if you run these programs in safe mode as opposed to booting to Windows normally?

You're welcome.

Results can be different in normal or safe mode.

Hijack This should be run in normal mode.
That's because you want to see everything running.
HJT is used primarily to identify malware,
Occasionally you have to run it in safe mode, but it's not preferred.
The latest versions check more locations than the earlier versions.

Why run in safe mode?
Windows protects files that are in use.
That's one reason you might get messages that your anti-virus cannot clean or delete this file.
In safe mode the virus or malware may not be running,
Thus gives chance to clean, with anti-virus or anti-spyware.

Another reason is that some malware runs as multiple processes,
You can have malware B which monitors and guards malware A
The moment you remove A, or even just stop process A, Malware B will restore it.
Booting into safe mode can stop one or both from starting, giving you a chance,

Closing , or not using the browser while cleaning also keeps the malware BHO's from running.

It's basically minimizing any processes from running, then taking them apart.
It can take several steps.
Sometimes the last step is involved .

As you have Windows98 another, very good option, is to use a dos anti-virus.
That way not even Windows is running. Very useful for cleaning.

The very first item removed, the 016 entry, may have been a result or may have been the infection source, It's a nasty active-x component.
You can download, update and install Spywareblaster to help prevent that,
It's free and uses virtually no resources,
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Also using another browser, like Firefox or Opera is very helpful.
