i have a question my parents have 2000 installed on a 1ghz machine with 512mb of ram..would switching over to xp home be a good idea or is 2000 good?isn't xp a bit faster at startup as well?

There isn't too much difference in speed or boot up speed, I would only go for xp if you want some of the features that are missing in 2000 pro such as system restore and a broader database for drivers.

Not much of a difference. Windows XP is heavily based on the Windows NT and 2000 core.
If you want the Windows XP eye candy you can use WindowBlinds (http://www.stardock.com/products/windowblinds/).
If you want System Restore you can use Norton GoBack (http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/products/backup_recovery/ngb40/index.html)

Windows 2000 = NT 5.0
Windows XP = NT 5.1
As said above, there's very little difference between them.
XP seems to boot faster because it puts the desktop up sooner... but isn't fully loaded any faster than 2k...
There's no reason that any home user needs to upgrade from 2k to XP... and in my opinion 2k is a lil faster because it runs a lil leaner than XP ;)
