I'd be interested in opening a dialogue with fellow members of this forum about how we perceive equality.

I'm interested in your viewpoints on topics such as the following:

Is the guarantee of equality adequately covered by our current legislation?

How should we resolve differences when perceptions of equality differences?

Is it even possible to guarantee true equality in a modern society?

Any takers?

Imo, "guarantee" is becoming more and more overused just as the word free has.

Passing legislation is one thing and policing it is another.

Good points, Frogy. Do you see ways that the policing of such legislation might be improved?

IMO there is no such thing as equality. In nature, there is a balance, yet there is no equality, predators predate on other animals to survive, some animals are stronger or have certain advantages over other animals, but none are equal. Of course when it comes to MAN, we are a little more complex, with our ability to think rather then just act instinctively, although we do that too, and are ability to create societies etc. What we are really trying to do with equality is eliminate barriers that we have created, say with womens rights for example or racial discrimination, so that those barriers no longer exist and women are treated the same as men with the same rights and opportunities and other racial groups aren't discriminated against or given unfair treatment. See in the animal kingdom, its tough luck, the mighty rule and if you don't like it you either leave or die, but again, we humans are a little more complicated.

I think trying to break down the barriers is a good thing, the problem is we don't know what the consequences will be, and do they really work? How long have women had equal rights, yet they are still discriminated against in the work place and not seen as real equals to their male counterparts. There is still discrimination against racial minorities, they are still not given fair treatment.

We aren't created equal, yet we want equality, why? What will it bring us, how will it make things better? Will we just be living a lie, we all know we aren't equal, I'm smarter then you, or know more then you do about computers but you know more then I do about cars, but I am taller then you but you are better looking then I am, are we still equal, can we be equal?

Personally I don't want equality. I would like the opportunity to compete using the same criteria. Equality in today's society is a joke where your ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, heritage, your station in life gives you an edge and I don;t really care until you try to take away what I have earned.

It isn't fair? A phrase that is in everyone's lexicon and is beaten to death on a daily basis. Because you have something but I don't is that unfair? Unless we become true Orwelltarians I can't imagine a society where there is true equality and IMHO that society would be one in which I wouldn't want to be.

But government would have you believe you are equal and where there are shortcomings they will top up your life.

Any takers?..

I really thought there would be more imput from those that are always advocating more equality.

Could it be that they've seen the future of that path and understand that it will manifest itself in solutions such as this?

I didn't put that together. I found it on a European forum. My biggest fear would be that it is found to be a real product, and not political commentary.
