For last couple of days my 3MB High Speed Internet (Bell Sympatico) got slower than dial-up. I called these idiots at Sympatico, after removing cookies and other crap, disconnecting and connecting, it didn’t help. They said that I am getting top speed and I can even have the 5MB high speed internet for extra $5. At this moment I am downloading with speeds of 10-30 kb/s!!!!!!!!! They told me that everything on their side is fine, and that I should take my computer to Com Technician. BUT all three computers in my house are slow. I tried connecting modem straight with my comp ( I thought it could be my router, but it is not!). Didn’t help still as slow. What could it be!!???? I think it the modem SpeedStream 5200 that is screwed.

Since on the topic. What speed should I be able to download with a good connection. When it was ok before my average speed was around 250 kb/s. Now it is 15kb/s..

What is wrong with my internet??????????

I think you should ask them for a new modem. I had an issue with the speed when it slowed down on certain times of the day. They later gave in like the idiots they are and said the problem was on there.

I'm with Rogers and about 5 yrs ago, the same thing happened to me.
I called Rogers. They tested their connection and said the problem was on my side. I checked everything on my side and I concluded that it was the modem.
When I requested a new modem, they said "No No, it can't be the modem".
Now, I'm a woman and I'm retired. Their "computer expert" assumed that this problem was beyond my comprehension.
After speaking with the "computer expert"'s supervisor, it was agreed that they would send someone but I would have to pay the housecall if it turned out that it was my computers.
When the guy showed up, he tested everything I had tested and he acknowledged that I knew what I was talking about (being in computers for over 25 years).
I got a new modem which solved the problem - and didn't pay a cent.
Some of these "experts" assume that they know it all, and we the "stupid client" don't know what we're talking about.
Remenber: you're the client so, press on and let us know what happens

Well, you didn't say what it was that you're downloading... if it's torrents or p2p that could be the problem... ;)

What you need to do is a speed test... actually do several... different times of the day for several days to get a good idea if something is wrong with your internet connection.

Did you try to recycle your modem? I have to do this every few days otherwise my connection becomes very slow and I even have trouble browsing. I unplug the modem for about 5 minutes and sometimes I even disconnect the cables going into the modem.

Since you called Bell, I'm sure they made you do that. You might also want to check your filters.

Agreed.

Also try reinstalling your ethernet card drivers, adding as well if you have a vista 390 or 350 phone or Satellite double up on your filters.

I'm actually noticing the same thing, for the last few days my speeds have been horrible. I can only get about 80 at the most.

I'm in the Bloor 427 area.

I download from download.sympatico.com website the one these idies gave me, and the speed I am getting is around 15 kb/s. I did recycle my modem by unplugging the cables and power and all that bull. Nothing changed in my house that could of course this problem, no phone change or filter moving. Everything is the same. I just tried this link that one of you posted to test the speed. Guess what I got??? Download less then 20 kb/s and upload 194 which is not that bad I guess.

I don’t know what to do.

Any more suggestions????????

OK, now you can use that to send to Bell to show them that there's a problem.

Just make 100% sure that you don't have a worm or something running in the background using up all your bandwidth before going back to Bell with this though.

Run an online virus scan and updated anti spyware scan too.

Because of this problem I did format my computer and install the newest Antivirus and Antispyware, so I am sure there is nothing on my computer that could cause it. I will call them tomorrow. I was thinking one of my friends has the same modem, I will borrow his and try and see if it is really the modem.

You wouldn't happen to be running Norton Internet Security by chance would you? I had a friend with a similar problem and as soon as he turned off the Norton firewall, speed was where it should be. This was after a fresh hookup of Sympatico with a brand new modem. Just a thought. If this is the case, get Zonealarm and use it instead.

theres a good chance its the lan card at the node.

I thought it was my network card, but all 3 computers at home are dead slow. I think it must be the modem. I will try my friends tomorrow and hopefully that will tell me if it is the modem.

Cobra, smirnoff is refering to the network card that Bell has at the Central Office that allows you to get the DSL service; not the NIC in your computers ;)

Try that other modem, and if that does nothing it's most likly thier card or something else in their network...
There is an obvious failure somewhere that they need to look at ;)

Ok, this is what I did. I borough my friend’s modem to see is mine is bad. Before I tried his I tested mine again. I got 7 kb/s, then I plugged his in and I got 305 kb/s. So I called back Sympatico tech and told them what I did. They made me try mine and his couple of times and they didn’t see any difference. Then I plugged my modem back and was working fine. But I pretended that it was still bad and I got them to send me a new one. The guy told me that they will test the old one and if it will turnout that is working properly then they will charge me $180.00. (don’t ask for what). So I told them that mine is actually working fine after I connected it back on. So, I cancelled the order.

Now when I came back home after couple of hours it is back to 10kb/s.!!!!!!

What is wrong with this sh**???!?!!?!!?!?

How is Rogers?? I had them for a while then I switched to bell, and now I don’t know who is actually better. Any suggestions on that one?

I guess you shot yourself in the foot with lieing to them. But i didnt hear anything about this $180 cause i had issues with the modem making a weird humming noise and i sent it back like 4 times and no extra charge.

I would tell them its not working again and you would like a new modem and for them to check there lines.

I'm already only getting 180kB/s max download before cuz they told me my lines couldn't handle any higher speeds. Now I get like 70kB/s max...

So it's most likely a problem on their end? I wonder if could have something to do with the strong winds and stuff.

I remember when I had my issue but it really wasnt my issue cause the monkeys at Bell didnt check there end. I had rain and snow and they finally found out it was on there end.

Ok, I gave up!!! I took my modem to my friend’s house and its working fine!! I know it is now my computer or my line at home because nothing was done or happened. I have three computers at home and when I plug them directly to the modem they are all as slow as mine.
