We have been using a Sympatico all-in-one router/modem combo for the last 6-7 months without any WEP encryption. I finally have chosen to enable it. 64 bit, we select a passcode and it generates us 4 keys. We select to use #1. I reboot the modem to make the settings take effect. Mine is fine since it is hardwired to the router. My dad's uses a linksys USB network adapter. The "Instant Wireless" program which ships with it shows 3-4 possible networks all with encryption (they have locks on the antenna) including the one that is ours. I set up a profile for it in the "profiles" section of the Instant wireless program. I enter a name, the SSID, 64bit encryption, and I generate the key according to the passcode. The key matches the one generated to me by the router config program. The problem is, he can't seem to connect to it. It ends up connecting to the only open signal which has an SSID of default. I'm not sure if anyone is familiar with the "instant wireless" program that ships with the linksys USB adapter but we are having this problem. Is there another free manager for wireless signals/networks I can use on his computer? He is running Win ME.

Can you upgrade his laptop to XP? I know that seems extreme but the built in software for wireless in XP is easy to use and personally I've never had a problem with it.

Seems like the default one is a little stronger then your access point and maybe your system also has the default as the top one on the list of which access points to connect to. What OS is the wireless machine running.?

Hop on over to MS and search for MS Broadband Network Utility if you don't have it yet or update to most recent one.
It will allow you to use wifi network manager similar to the one that ships with XP on Win9x/MS/2k machines. I believe it also creates Wireless Zero Service that should allow you to get rid of the utility that came with your adapter.
