In 3 words...its a joke...Its been around for awhile now and the guy talks so fast and doesn't really explain anything. You would have to tape it and watch a few times to figure out what he is doing. Useless in my opinion. Haven't watched it since TCM started their own shows.

If I'm not mistaken wasn't Steve Dotto a guest on TCM show?

I found his shows to be like watching an infomercial... just advertising products and briefly telling you how they work

Much like Dave Chalk's (http://www.chalktv.com/Connected/) show...

Thats pretty much what I was getting at Dan. Oh sure he had all the latest gadgets for you to see...most of which the average consumer could either not afford or have no use for in the first place. If it had been a technical type show like TCM is, I might have enjoyed it. Demonstrating new products is nothing technical at all. The only reason he is still going is from support from business getting him to flog their products. He should be :mbx: to think he was helping people otherwise.

Unless I am missing something, no one has has praise whatsoever for the show in question. Quite the opposite. This is actually a good resource for Les and Deb, I would think for ideas on what "not" to do on their shows. Find out what people want and dont want to see. Just my thoughts.

You guys have to get into the new ago of Podcasting and vidcasting.

The list is LONG VERY VERY long of shows. I'll post more, but for starters:

So many more, there are over 9,000 podcast shows of everything you can think of.

No offense intended here but for the average "Joe" that owns a computer and needs help fixing it, podcasting and vidcasting is something thats beyond what they would understand at the moment. The vast majority of people I have run into just want to know how to troubleshoot and fix PC problems, not get into fancy gadgets that will only confuse them more. Thus my earlier point. The number of seniors these days using a computer is expanding greatly and all they want are simple answers on how to fix things that dont work the way they used to. That in my opinion should be the focus of shows, not something they will never be able to figure out or ever use.

Steve Dotto was on TCM couple years ago - probably way back in 2001-2002. I really liked Steve Dotto. I define him as a great host on Dotto Tech (then known as Dotto's Data Café). Apart from "Dave Chalk's Computer Show" (then known as "Dave Chalk Computing Life", now "Dave Chalk Connected"), I gotta think that the comparison between Chalk and Dotto are a 50/50 stereotype.

True, that most people won't know how to get podcasts and what not, but lot of people who are adviced fined alot of the tv shows out there just boring due to the fact they are geared towards newbies. And sometimes in the need of something alittle more advanced.

Way back when Steve and I did TCM , we ran into Steve Dotto at a Computer Expo.
I was star struck because he was on well before us , he knew who we were as he had seen the show. (that was a proud moment)

He came on the show as a call in guest and we talked about Apple vs PC.

Very nice guy , hard not to sound info commercial like when showing new stuff...

I would like to make the new series more available via pod casting ... and torrent but findng myself a tad burned out .. so taking all the spare time to veg :)

Its nice to know the history of things Les...thanks. After the year you have had, I dont see anyone having a problem with you just relaxing and getting back on track as best you can. It will take time. Veg as long as need be. :)

Just glad we could get a few things cleared up. Its your show, you do what you feel is best as you are the professional and know what people want to see.

It's payment for the advertising ;)

Most "computer shows" serve as free advertising for the computer industry (homepage anyone? (http://www.pulse24.com/homepagehome/) ), including TCM at times. Half the time they are promoting video editing software or games, so criticism of Dotto tech in invalid unless this hypocrisy is acknowledged.

I enjoy watching any computer/technology related television show. So Dotto and Dave Chalk are interesting to watch. TCM was awesome back in the day. I never seem to catch it anymore.

If one of you lads remember the days of when Les Shaw and Stephen Hewlett who used to host the predecessor of "The Computer Mechanics" called "The Computer Guys", this show was quite interesting, when (in one episode) showed us a computer game from Doom. Yea, Doom was one of my fave computer games, but time has changed for them.

Don't forget the show on G4TechTV (available only on digital cable and satellite) called "Call for Help", it's a little hilarious at start, but quite an interesting show to watch.

I can understand that you would like to take some time out to "recharge your batteries" so to speak. I certainly miss seeing the TCM show now that I live in Mississauga. :)

I caught part of that last night. The guy is still stuck in 98 and knows nothing about how XP works. Not sure what he was talking about but he told the caller to delete the boot.ini file. Now why in tarnation would you ever do that? Good luck deleting it and have your computer boot up after that. :rrg:

nothing wrong with computer shows. It seems lately its all about new products.
There is nothing wrong with that either. But its getting to the point thats
all there is to computing buy, buy,buy sell, sell, sell.......
My day to day computing experience is for more indepth than selling and buying
new hardware/software.

One only needs to look around the board to find what people are interested in.
In my experience its not always to buy new stuff its to get the stuff they have
working and to keep it working
imho

I personally like the old Dotto cafe', and Dave Chalk show.
Not for the purpose of learning anything new about fixing my exsisting products, etc.. but to learn about new ones..
It seems like the shows for the most part, are being knocked because it is an advert for products and gagets, etc.. and not for fixing your computer systems, and whatnot.
But how can you knock these shows?
They never make claim to the content they are providing the public to be "how to fix your computer system" or, " How to use this program" ...
They are just different, and if you don't really care about those type of things, then don't tune in.. simple.
TCM back in the day (I don't get it anymore -- Brampton), was great.. I loved it..
They were not commercialized to the same effect as Dave Chalk, but I enjoyed the content was geared shed some basic light on how to fix certain issues with your computer.
The only broadcast I've seen from TCM recently (well in the past month), was the one on torrent (??) talking about the graphic program..
I found it cool, and pretty impressive with the ease of use and how Les was able to place himself in that huge office, but just like most people in thred have been knocking the other shows for - TCM didn't give suggestions on how to fix anything. They were advertising the product, and demostrating the ease of use of certain programs.
I see no difference between all the shows..
THey all have something to offer certain people..

Don't get me wrong... I'm not knocking any show for showing new products... that's all part of computing and I do enjoy seeing new things.

But when each and every show from start to end is nothing but product demos... that's just an infomercial.

Both of these shows used to be a mixture of tech and demos; and that was nice... but they slowly went to mostly pushing product... that bores me.http://www.mysmilie.de/english/green/smilies/tired/img/026.gif

If you think that show sucks check out "Home Page". The whole show is about advertising and at the end they supposely help people but really its just so the "computer helper" can get his business in there and charge people for computer help when they need to go to him.

I agree with you 100% on that. I spend more time yelling at the TV that the guy is a idiot then watching it.

"What the hell are you talking about"
"What? No man, it's spyware!" ...... Goes on and on.

Ya I remember I had an issue with my pc. I didnt call the show but spoke to the guy through email. He tells me how i have a virus even though i didnt even have one. He was going to charge me just to look at the pc and see what the problem is. I think he should have charged me when he is actually going to fix the problem.

Basically the problem wasnt a virus as i did a search on google and others had the same issue and it was some sorta thing i had to add onto my pc sorta like adding a registry key or something like that.
