While testing the audio setup on my linux box I found something interesting.
files and folders!......
the picture shows a store bought audio cd. I have tried other
store bought audio cd's and it has similar files and folders.
Remember Windows only shows you the cda tracks.
kinda cool.

The computer can be programmed to show anything in different ways. What you're looking at is either the content of a hybrid CD (which I doubt because the files would be too big to have room left for the PCM tracks) or the browser you're using represent the tracks as ripped WAV files which only get actually ripped when you try to open them (I've seen this before).
But do not take this snapshot as the actual true content of the CD. It's very misleading.

I understand that EX its just the way the directory is set up.
I think its for compatibility. The information files are in text
format. It is used on some players that scroll the names during play.
Linux from what I have learned looks at the disk format not just the files.
A dos disk would appear to look like one large file too if you look at it from a
sector view.
