i have a couple apps to pull that can show you the serial of a currently running OS but is it possible to find the serial on a slave drive containing a valid system?

my nephews system is DOA (it had 3800ish virus/infected files). keeps rebooting. hits a blue screen for a sec that says it is doing some dump. i want to do a complete reinstall but the system (an emachine from tigerdirect) didn't come with any discs and no sticker on the box either. so i need the serial for XP from that machine.

Will it boot into safe mode? Hit F8 during boot up.

boot from a Win98 Boot disk and look at the partitions
chances are if no disk was provided the the OS is on a different partition.
contact tigerdirect for the Key

i booted up off a ghost floppy and there was only 1 partition on that drive (114gb on a 120gb drive). any other ideas before contacting tiger?

yes, they gave me an emachine number to contact. great service without talking to anyone. i called them and in the automated section it tells you to have your serial number ready so i go over to the machine and turn the machine around. ta da, the XP key sticker. however after installing XP & SP 1 & 2 there are a bunch of drivers that haven't been picked up. now i have to call emachine about a driver disc or check their site but at least i got the system installed.
