I installed mandrake 10.0,# 1 it asks me for my root password which I have no idea what or where to find that # 2 when I try to install msn messenger it always comes back that I entered the wrong password which I know I entered the right password.Any help with these two problems would help as I,am experimenting with linux and would like to make a go with it.....thank you

you installed a linux without a password?
you must have if its asking for one.
I don't use msn so I can't help there.

I don,t remember it asking for a password when I downloaded linux ken_ver,isthere anyway of getting a password without deleteing linux and starting over again?

The easiest way is to reset the root password. To do that, you need to boot into single user mode. Follow the instructions, depending on whether you use lilo or grub as your bootloader. I'm assuming you use grub. Where it says Use passwd - just type in "passwd" (without the quotes) and hit enter. It should prompt you for a password. Type one in, then hit enter, it should prompt you to confirm. Do so and hit enter again. You should then be able to type in "shutdown r now" (again without the quotes), and hit enter. It should then reboot and you should be able to use the new password you just created.

I did it a little different sybil but it still worked,thanks for your input.Linux is sure different from windows but I like change

Glad it worked! The best thing I did was take the introductory course at Conestoga College - pretty intensive and all command line. Now find time to get in more practice..........
