Just wondering if anyone has experience with cataracts in dogs. It looks like my sisters dog has cataracts and I wonder what the options are. Yes we can ask our vet, but I'm asking what experience other people have had in terms of successful operations/surgery and also to find out costs.

thanx

A neighbour's dog had them. When I met them, they said their dog was blind. They found out it was cataract and had the operation. The dog can now see like any other dog. They feel it was really worth it. They have no children and this is their baby.

It depends on the age of the dog really. Also the type im sure is a factor. Best to ask ur vet to get the best advice.

Right. Thanx. I am aware the surgery can improve the dogs vision quite a bit. I'll look into it at the vet. Does anybody know what the costs are? Its good to compare so I know what the score is when we get quoted.

Take a look at this forum, do a search for cataracts, in Dog Health. There are tons of threads on that subject and quite a few Canadian members so you might find a cost there as well. You can always join and ask your specific questions.

As previously stated ( depends on the age of the dog ).

We have a deaf 17 yr old Clockerspaniel, loved dearly by the entire family, however if she goes blind from the cataracts which are forming it is time to put her down.
Cost is irrelevant providing the animal has health on it's side.
Trying to extend the life of an old dog is cruel in my opinion even though vets can do a lot nowadays, ask what is the quality of the animal's life going to be? And how much will the vet benifit financially. Is it worth it just because it can be done?

Oh, forgot to mention, the dog is a Yellow lab and He turns maybe 7 or at the most, 8 years old.

Thanx for the info, and especially the pet forum link Tess :)
