hey guys, my friend and I are building a site and the problem that comes is that nobody can view it besides us.
We registered the domain name, have an Internet host(freeservers.com) and were paying them for the full year to host the site.
Now my buddie can view the site and I can at our places but another friend further in the city can't see it, and I can't view it at work.
It just comes up with the msn search page and can't find our site.
Everything is built with HTML code but I'm not too sure if that is the problem
all the files/code have been stored on the account on http://www.freeservers.com
don't mind the name...the free part is crappy so were paying for the standard package till we get a better deal
site is:
http://www.nprogresscrew.com
any ideas?

when did you register your .com name?
maybe it needs to appropriate longer.
try again tomorrow.
I was able to view it

I was thinking the same thing. I couldnt see it here (sympatico) I know some Isp's take alittle longer to pickup DNS signals it may need another 24 hrs to appropriate all depending on the Isp

dbusguy...I origionally paid the $9.99 us to register the name, then we setup the free host package but since it was spamming the site with advertisements, we upgraded to the monthly payment package.
so I registered the domain name and the site with freeservers.com
I was told it might take about 24hours to accept the site and have the DNS setup properly.

Welcome to TCM Hondata!
The domain name 'nprogresscrew.com' was registered as of Nov 13, 2005 and is fully active if the web hosts name servers are pre-populated upon registration. If the name servers were not pre-populated then it can take 24-48 hours to propagate around the world.

This test connects to a number of commonly used DNS servers, and tests to see if they have your DNS record(s) in their cache.
With this in mind, it must be a DNS/Name server issue.
The domain name is currently point to name servers:
Name Server.......... adenine.melbourneit.com.au
Name Server.......... enterprise.melbourneit.com.au
A WHOIS lookup for the web hosting provider (freeserver.com) indicates:
NS2.FREESERVERS.COM 64.136.20.23
NS1.FREESERVERS.COM 64.136.25.253
(Well, for one thing the web hosting provider has NS2 before NS1, which isn't the best way to do it)
The name servers for your domain are pointing to melbourneit.com.au, not the same as the name servers for the host. This would suggest three things:
1. The domain was registered by freeservers.com using Melbourneit as the registrar
2. Freeservers is using third party DNS and thus there is a delay in the resolution of the domain
3. The name servers were never changed to point to the correct name servers
After reviewing the posts by others, I tried the web site in the browser (1st it didn't load, but the 2nd time is loaded). This means three things:
1. Your host or melbourneit has a slow DNS server(s)
2. There is something wrong with third party DNS (if they are using 3rd party DNS)
3. Someone messed up with the DNS either at melbourneit or freeservers
Aside from your DNS problems, the domain name isn't even in your name. The administrative contact should be in your name if you are the rightful owner of the domain. The following WHOIS output shows that Melbourne is the owner:
Domain Name.......... nprogresscrew.com

Thanks Chris K for the info.
I'm going to contact Freeservers.com tomorw as I couldn't do it these past two days as their phone # seems to be down.
Can't still access the site.
I'll be canceling with them and looking for another host

Did you pay for the domain or did it come with the service? I ask because if you didn't pay for it, and they were offering a free domain with service, then read their fine rpint. They might own it for "x" years (usually 1 or 2).

Yep, that is a common problem with many hosting companies (or companies that resell hosting) that they have fine print that everything is under their name until the 'trial' period is over.
What many people don't know is that this practice is against ICANN and CIRA regulations. Since no one knows...no one fights it in court.

I paid seperate from the serviceWell then, as per Chris K's reply post with domain ownership information, they own it, not you. I know that this is hindsight, but you should always check domain ownership, if for nothing else, to make sure that all contact information is up-to-date. It is the most common challenge faced in domain names changes/transfers.

The new security regs for domains (.com, .net, .org) are really strict about this.

Of course it would be possible; he paid for the domain and has a record of the domain reg. As long as it was within one year of the domain reg, the domain is his unless the registrar has grounds to change or retract the domain reg.

As long as it was within one year of the domain reg, the domain is his unless the registrar has grounds to change or retract the domain reg.But does he have the username/password access to the registrar? I just went through a domain issue, for a client, and it was a nightmare. They forgot their password and couldn't validate by the credit card used for the initial transaction. I did all in my power to get access, and finally figured out their credit card number (last 4 digits) challenge - but nothing could be done until that was resolved.
It was the most frustrating experience I have ever had, a challenge resolved - BUT it had to be according to the rules of access.
Rules have changed over the last year and domain management tightened up dramatically. At one time you could call and talk to someone, convince them that you owned the domain, and that was it. Not anymore. Without the access info (user/pass) it requires documents to be filled out, witnessed, drivers license pic, etc., and all by mail.
Now, I see that his site is resolving now, so I would deeply suggest constant, non-stop, attempted contact with the host (or whoever registered the domain), and get the user/pass info (which is most likely on the host master account, so they won't do that), or at least get them to transfer ownership.

Don't know who you deal with for domain names, but that has always been the case. To prove you are the owner of the domain name, you must fax a photo id and your sig on it. As well, if you have an organization defined, it must be sent in on the company letterhead. No company should be giving out info about a domain name (unless public info like WHOIS info) over the telephone without being able to ensure they are speaking to the domain owner. In the case of where an email address is invalid or out-of-date, you must fax this info directly to the registrar.

Many registrars had some lax policies, and this is why ICANN clamped down. A carefully worded phone call quite often circumvented any "rules", and changes were procesed verbally - no longer. Too many domains were being hijacked through bad management. This is also why you can have "privacy" put in place on domain name registrations, to cut back on exposed WHOIS information. Registrars also offer a "lockdown" of domain changes, unless unlocked by the administrator of that domain by using the proper user/pass combo. Canadian regulations, for the CA domains, is even better.

I will agree with you there, alot of registrars (or resellers of registrars - Tucows/OpenSRS resellers come to mind alot) have lapse policies and don't go to full length to check the admin contact of a domain and send domain info to anyone. Even .CA domain registrars have this problem, I know that one of my clients had a domain with Domainsatcost and knowing the domain policy, I requested Domainsatcost to send the domain login to the domain owner.....well what did they do..they sent it to me. As well, Domainsatcost has this 'LOCK/UNLOCK' or "Secure" option in their control panel...why? this don't apply to .CA domains at all. You can't lock a .CA domain name.
Many of registrars these days are just being very stupid with their business. They don't follow policy and don't take any responsibility for their mess ups.
The feature of the 'privacy' WHOIS info is another thing...according to ICANN, this is not allowed. The domain name WHOIS information should be public information.
Anyhow...we're probably scaring hondata...LOL
....and looks like we have alot of reader on this thread.
