Yes, ntdetect.com is found in Windows XP. NTDetect detects installed hardware components at startup time and displays the hardware information structures passed to the kernel.

Interesting cause i dont see it on my pc. I clicked on run and typed in ntdetect.com and it didnt find anything.

Where should these files be found in system32? I was on some site that someone asked this question "How Do I Correct An NTLDR or NTDETECT.COM Not Found Error"

Booting directly from the Windows XP CD

1) Place your Windows XP CD into your CD-ROM and Reboot your PC

2) XP's setup program will automatically start and files will be loaded to memory

3 When you reach the Welcome to Setup screen choose the Repair option by pressing R

4) This will open the Recovery Console

5) The list of Windows installations will appear

6) As you only have one installation on your PC you need to press the number which is relevant to your installations location. This, obviously will typically be 1

7) You now need to enter your Administrator password to gain access. If you are suing Windows XP Home the administrator password is blank by default so simply press Enter

8) Now enter the following depending upon which file you need to replace. In both instances replace the 'X' with the drive letter of your CD-ROM

COPY X:\i386\NTLDR C\:
COPY X:\i386\NTDETECT.COM C:\

11) Finally remove your XP CD from the CD-ROM and then type Exit

12) Reboot your machine to see if the the problem has been cured

I dont think i need to do this cause i just put in the cd and used windows explorer to go to the i386 directory in the windows xp cd. I take it by copying those 2 files to the C:\ would fix my problem even though my pc still finds all my hardware and all that. Or should I just put those copied files to system32?

Both NTLDR & NTDETECT.COM are hidden. Conduct an advanced search.

But when I click on run and type ntdetect.com shouldnt it find it?

I also in my search advanced options i have "search for system folders" clicked on, "search for hidden files and folders" clicked on and "search subfolders" clicked on and it didnt find it.

So where should these 2 files be found anyway? I cant find them on my xp.

Both should be located at the root folder of the bootable volume mostly likely C:\ or wherever Windows has been installed.

On the View tab, under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders and click on Hide protected opertaing system files.

Then conduct a search for NTLDR & NTDETECT.COM

To search for a file or folder
