Hello All,

I知 going to be calling my parents insurance company soon to be put under my moms car as a 3rd driver. Now I知 currently 19 but Turning 20 Mid Dec. I was told that it will probably be better to call when I知 20 as I am no longer a Teen and I could get a lower rate. I知 just wondering what everybody things or if anybody that痴 in the industry could let me know their opinion.

Also after they give me a Quote do you think that if i mentioned that I was a Student it would help at all?

Thanks for the help.

Some companies give discounts to student with high marks .. so if you get consistantly over 90% you may get a discount.

As to being over 20 I do not think it will make much differance... more based upon years of experience at that age.... get married, or turn 25 and I believe you will see a diff.

State Farm has a good student discount if your marks are over 75%.

It doesn't matter if you are 20 or 19. Depends how much experience you have.

Are you going to put yourself as an occasional driver or an actual 3rd driver?

Im not sure, I think I would have to be 3rd driver no? Because my mom is main and my dad is second. I will only be driving once in a blue moon. I wont be driving to school/work or anything, is just so i will slowly get more experience etc.

Thanks

How many cars in your family?

Currently 2 cars in the house,

- 1991 GMC Safari Van (95,000km est)
- 1993 Pontiac Sunbird 3.1L (Past 120,000km

I would be driving the sunbird, the odd time.

Thanks for the help :)

So basically you need to be on their policy as an occasional driver. Both those cars are old so it won't really matter which one you are on.

I used to drive an 88 GMC Safari "occasionally" through State Farm. It only cost my parents $220 a year.

The way you are doing is the best way to increase insurance experience ;).

They may rape you silly. State Farm was the only one that charged my parents $220 per year. All other companies my parents looked into tacked on an extra $1400 a year. Depends on the insurance company. This is why we stayed with State Farm for so long. I went through State Farm, my brother currently is going through them as an occasional driver, my sister will be next (taking her G2 in December), and then I have another sister. State Farm was pretty good to students compared to other companies. It all comes down to the insurance company's policy and pricing.

when u turn 23 insurance drops a bit, when you turn 25 it drops again, and then it's all based on years of experience.
from 19 to 20 years old - no difference.

To speed things up, the policy owner or holder should make the changes, not you.

I can't vouch for that. My insurance barely moved when I turned 23. I think it actually stayed the same. I can't wait till June since I'll be turning 25 and I'll see IF it drops or not.

@sickcars:
Not a problem. Make sure you ask them everything before doing anything :).
What is your parent's mother tongue?

you'll also get a better rate if you have taken Drivers Ed. or private driving lessons, just get a copy of your certificate for proof.

Just call and inquire as to how much it would be to add you to your parents policy. State their policy #, and get the Quote.

How long ago was that? It was more than 3 years ago then it is useless and you don't need it.

I called them and got a Quote,

Year - $1100
Month - $92

Because my parents policy is over in April my parents were saying for me to wait untill April and I will be added when the new bill comes since I wont be driving much in the winter anyways.

So i dunno what do you guys think??

Thanks

You need insurance if you are going to drive. The sooner you get it the faster it will go down(with a good record)
Go on their ins. now...they'll be charged just for the 4 1/2 months till Apr...about $350-$400
then it should go down slightly in Apr. for the next year.

Do Not drive if your not insured. You don't even want to know what it'll cost you if you have any kind of accident (even if its not your fault)

Teenaged boys take a beating with ins. Its not fair , but its life.

If you can get on your parents ins for a few years, yours will be cheaper when you get your own car.
Maybe with a part time job you could offer to pay a bit,
Good luck

Not to mention what it will cost you of you get pulled over by the cops and get caught without insurance. The RIDE spotcheck program is out in full force right now.

Ya I know, my parents wont let me drive anymore anyways, I think I took the car maybe 5 times but 4 of the times it was about 5min drive and the other time was maybe 10-15min.

But either way I cant drive anymore unless I have insurence. But like my dad said "Your not going to be driving in the winter with all this snow and ice anyways so just wait untill April"

lol so unless I got a Very good reason which i still have to try that rate going lower in april line, but if that does not work I have to wait.

Thanks For The help

With all due respect to your father, he is wrong and that is why we have so many accidents and fender benders in the winter - Too many drivers with little or no experience in driving in inclement weather. Once you get your insurance, you need to get out there and practice driving in snow. Do that in an empty parking lot on a sunday morning after a storm. Take an advanced driving course.

I learned to drive in the worst conditions and it's paid off in spades. Do yourself the same favour.

Yes I know what you mean I agree with you, when he said that to me I said in my head "Well if I cant drive in the winter how am I supposed to learn how to control the car in bad weather?"

But I dunno thats how he is but im going to see if I can try and get the insurence on now so when we make the new policy I will hopefully have a better rate.

Thanks

Go on the insurance anyways. It counts nicely for lower rates.

Funny story. When I got my G2 in April, the following day I drove to school by myself. That's how trusting my parents were. The whole summer I took like 10-13 trips to Toronto for my brother's rugby games with my parent's new vehicle. Then I started driving in the winter in a RWD 88 Safari. Haven't had one crash since I started driving :). I know the ins and outs of a RWD vehicle in the winter and prefer it to a FWD car. So your father is wrong. The sooner you learn (even in an empty parking lot) the better for you. You mature in your driving much faster. Also I've avoided tons of accidents due to people's stupidity and predicting what they would do. When I'm right it pays off :). I say get behind the wheel as soon as possible. That's the only way you will learn.
