What's the latest on ROGERS capping torrents and P2p.
I have not been able to download anything in the past 3 weeks.
I hear a lot of people complaining, yet other ROGERS users are saying that theirs is working just fine?

Same here...
I'm in Guelph and use IGS for my DSL. I'm pretty sure they have a wide area of service. Below is a link to their service areas...

Their service is outstanding and works out to be less expensive then Bell.

What P2P? I've had REALLY slow or not starting AT ALL P2P with things like Shareaza and Emule. But for Torrents you HAVE to use BitComet with the encrypted headers.

I was able to get up to 150 KB/s last night with BITComet...i did that encryption, set it to always and changed the port to 1720!
I have not tried the patch yet..
can it harm your computer in any way?

Hi I just tried bitcomet and getting slower speeds than azereus... I changed the port to 1720 and I assume the encyrption thing you are talking about is when you goto preferences/connection/protocol header encycrpt and you set that to "ALWAYS" in Bitcomet.
anything else I need to do for greater speeds??
what is the SP2 fix you guys are talking about?
thanks

Download http://www.xp-antispy.org/ and under special/connection limit set it to what you want.
Ps..try a torrent with a huge number of seeds to check speed say amusic file at the top of the list

Ok i did that and set the default to 50 spots open.. however I just tried a torrent with 53 seeds and 3 leechers and I was getting 184... shouldnt it be faster with extreme?

actually thats not bad at all.
What your thinking is why isn't it faster becasue i got extreme?
Problem is you now have the speed but your limited to how fast the other people can give it and your client settings. (also public trackers tend to be slower).
make sure yout uload is no higher then 70 when downloading (i would set it to 40) and no more then 4 at a time.
max conection depend on your router or modem (router vary on how much they can handle)
cheaper one can handle no more then 256 connections at a time so set to 240 (some clients don't have this option)
More expensive ones can handle 4096 (linsky)
max conection per client i would set to 100
and if you can get on a private site that you can normaly max out your conection.
with bitcomet i have more then a few times maxed my conection out on bell.

what's everyone using to get single files, now that we have torrent issue resolved?
DC++
Limewire
etc?
I'm sure I don't want to go with Bit Comet. Of course, I don't want to imagine that I've got the whole story when I don't. So I would like to read more. For now, and in the absence of a fair bit of info to the contrary, I will assume that Bit Comet is in fact not a team player in the P2P community, since a reputable source, namely Slyck, carries news to that effect. I've seen the ban (of bad or unverified clients, including Bit Comet) on at least one site I visit.
I forgot about the anti-worm measures that Microsoft has been applying to it's os, to the dismay of file sharers. (I'm sure Microsoft is all torn up about it.) I initially intalled the patch (I use Shareaza and, for now, Bit Tornado), but it's effect didn't seem to last long. Reading around, I learned that it doesn't have much chance of working due to the fact that Microsoft simply releases regular security updates that reset the limit.
Anti XP Spy looks interesting. But I've never heard of it before. I did donwload it. I just wish there was more on their forums to look at so I could get a handle on whether I want to play around with the prog. There's only the one small English speaking forum at the Anti XP Spy site.
Since buying a new comp the other day, My file sharing has gone to the dogs. The funny thing is, It was okay for one day. I have the firewalls (Norton's Internet Security, Windows XP Home & Nvidia's built-in) set to off, to no avail. I too am wondering whether I'm screwed with XP Home... or Rogers... or both. Friends have recently signed on with Bell, but they don't do file sharing the way I do. One is a complete noob. The other guy, who built my pc for me (I know enough that I can turn it on and off) uses newsgroups, which I understand are the way to go. Eventually...

bicomets fine.
for a short time people where banning it becuase some nasty guys had made a patch to fool with the upload ratio.
The limit isn't reset by microsoft as this would be mucking with a persons persoanl privcy as i am sure may can tell you it remains changed unless you chage it back yourself.
As for norton is bloat and better gotten rid of as it mucks with computers bigtime.

I started using BitComet and I'm very happy with it. I'm also using Norton and don't think it has a negative effect on it. If it does, it doesn't seem to bother me.
I applied some of the tweaks and find the speeds are much higher than with BitLord and the previously used Azureus. Azureus used a lot of resources slowing the rest of the processes down.
I'm glad I switched to BitComet :)

You will find that BitComet is being banned more and more on private sites as it ignores the private flag.
Of course if you prefer to use BitComet and prefer to use public sites, then feel free to do so.
If I wanted anyone and everyone to know what traffic is going through my IP address I'd rather rent a billboard though.

I heard that Azureus is **** and Bitcomet is the way to go because Bitcomet also has the DHT feature and the ISP blocking feature thing.

True.
As for 1720, I did make the change on BitComet and it does seem to do something, had a torrent at 50'ish% for a long long time and jumped to 97% in like 3 hrs. So it did seem to help it.

Jack Kapica, in the Globe And Mail, recently reported on Rogers's recent move to allocate bandwidth to more 'worthy' uses, putting file sharers at the bottom. The problem here is with what 'bottom' means. I've never been one to care about whether others have more - money, speed, whatever - than me. But when others have much, much more than me and I have nothing or almost nothing, I'm not a happy camper. My speeds now, with Rogers, are often 0 KB/s. As Kapica points out, Rogers has been fooling around with this allocation software for about a year, but has not been telling it's users anything about it or about what it intends to do.
Tyler Hamilton, writing in the Toronto Star a number of months back, also wrote about this. Apparently some ISPs out west have already used the excuse that more people using up precious bandwidth have necessitated the use of allocation software and a pricing system that will allow already paying customers of hi speed access to pay again - just to keep the access that they originally paid for and enjoyed! I'm not technically savvy enough to get into the details beyond that. But I don't believe that the ISPs are justified in doing this. They are always on the lookout for ways to increase revenue streams. But it's reading around, mainly, that tells me that they don't have to do this. I can't remember the technical reasons given. So that's something for those of us who are interested to research and discuss.
In the meantime, I'm fairly resigned to jumping from Rogers, which has already spooked me with the way it makes major changes to it's services with no input from those affected and no warning. You have to read a frikkin newspaper article to know what they're doing. Others told me about their recently applied caps, which, Don't get me wrong, really won't affect me terribly (I'm not a big user of bandwidth by a long shot). But I don't like Rogers's attitude and the way they spring surprises on us. Remember their negative billing option? Then a few weeks back, I read that they were going to drop newsgroups (usenet). This I don't know much about, but I used a few for getting help with my WordPerfect and for digital camera assistance. The WordPerfect group I went to 'always' came through for me. WordPerfect's manual, which I possess, is nothing more than a glorified table of contents. My group may or may not have been affected, but it spooked me, as I noted. But this allocation thing...
A final word about Bit Comet. I care. I don't want file sharing 'at any cost'. I don't believe that the end justifies the means. I believe that the 'means' are everything. If using Bit Comet is not good for the p2p community, then I will not use it, whether or not I am able to file share as a result. Anywho, I'll eventually learn how to use newsgroups.

I have changed the tcp limit before.
Port 1720 doesn't seem to work. Mainly cause I'm not getting any "remote" connecitons anymore with 1720 on bitcomet, even with port forwarding.
Main problems I"m seeing is that the rates go up to like 40 and drop back down to 10. I used to get like 200 k speeds with my extreme. I'm stuck with rogers now, buying the stupid modem and usin git to get great speeds for like 1 month.
What is this encrypted headers thing you speak of Digital? how do i get it?

What port 1720 ? I don't know how to change my DHT to 1720 ? It's always running on 1320.
Also... ah, I'll post a new thread.
