Hey all,
I just saw a few scratches on my rear bumper today. I am not sure when it happened cause the last couple of days it was raining so I didnt really pay attention. It looks like someone was trying to park and they scratched it. It must have been another SUV because my trucks bumper is a bit higher that the front of a car. It was either Monday or Tuesday, and it could of happened either at the grocery store or one other place (for sure not at work). Can this be claimed through my insurance? Would this affect my payments?
Thanks.

buff it out yourself if you can.
Making a claim may cause your rates to rise.

If its simply a few minor scratches, buff it out with rubbing compound as Ken has stated. Would not be worth it to go through insurance as you deductible would most likely be more than it would be to fix it. It may need some spray touch up,(assuming its a plastic bumper) then after a few days use the rubbing compound to blend in the sprayed area. A light coat of wax after that and you are good to go.
Edit: Forgot to mention that if it needs spray touch up paint, do several light coats and let it dry in between coats to prevent runs.

No matter how minor or major these scratches are, even if you have to take it to a shop and get it repainted, it's not worth filing a claim...
You'll end up paying for it one way or the other, so best just to take care of it yourself :)

Just as I thought. I will try at get some pictures of it and post it. If you could give me some suggestions of products I could use to fix it afterwards. I will post them as soon as I can.

Depending on the depth of the scratches, you may need to do a light sanding with say 400 grit sandpaper to smooth out the deeper ones, touch up with a spray tough up paint to cover the sanding and the scratches as stated above..light coats, then any rubbing compound to blend things in and a coat of wax. It will take some time and patience to do, but I would let it go until spring as paint will take forever to dry in this weather. It doesn't look bad enough to worry about it until then. One little tip before painting is to get a tack cloth from CT or your local auto parts place and rub lightly to get rid of the fine dust after sanding.
Paint, buff with rubbing compound to blend, then a good coat of wax.
