I have rogers connected to my home computer, however recently got a laptop. I know the laptop has a network card etc.. I took out the cable from the home computer and plugged it into the laptop and it still wont connect to the net. Both computers have Winxp... isnt winxp plug and play with regards to internet connection? Thats whats Ive always been under the impression. Everycomputer that I've had I just plug in the cable and it detects it and works..

any ideas?

You have to release the IP address because it's assigned to your desktop PC. Do do this, go to start, run, type "cmd" without the quotes, and in the command window type ipconfig /release, wait 5 minutes and then connect it to your laptop.

Newer laptops sometimes have a switch.

Also check under your conections to see if you had a dialup or the like as this would likely block rogers.

its not a new laptop.. its a few years old.. it was handed down by a family member...I disabled the "modem" and just have the lan connection open and nothing...still doesnt work

Just to be 100% clear that you did this right, you released the IP from your desktop and saw it say it was released? Sometime you get a message saying that it didn't release...

Also, what model modem are you using?
If it's the older (non-docsis) Terayon Modem, it won't clear the ARP table and you won't be able to hook up anything else without getting Rogers to reset it from their end.
If it is a docsis modem, there's a reset button on most of them that must be pressed while you plug in the power to clear the arp table.

It would be well worth the money to get a router so you only have to go through this once to get it online and then all you have to do is plug / unplug your laptop whenever you want ;)

I did see that it was released... I have a docsis modem but I didnt reset it.. I'll give that a shot and see what happens. Im gonna get a router is right so I dont have to do this..

what about if I were to bring the laptop to a hotel lets say..... how would that work then?

In a hotel that has a wired system, yes it'll work just fine... you're hooking into their router.
Allot of them are going wireless though... so you might want to think about getting a wireless network card for it.

well I tried releasing and then hit the button on the modem... plugged in the cable to the laptop.. booted it and then turned the modem back on and nothing..

I think it could be the intel8255x card that is in the laptop.. maybe its shot.. I tried updating the drivers today.. they were from 2001 and the laptop is running winxp home.

if I got wireless network card then I could ditch the old one.. I bet thats the problem..

any ideas?

Maybe you're not saying it right... or you didn't do it right...
You have to unplug the modem. press and hold the reset button while plugging the power back in.

If you get a wireless router and wireless card for the laptop, then yes, it would take care of any possible problems with your exsisting card... but it's rare that they die...

I didnt do that with the modem exactly.. I'll try that when I get home

Im wondering if the card just isn't compatable with windows xp though the drivers in it were from 2001. I had to search like crazy.. maybe I installed the wrong updated drivers but it didnt work before anyways... its just weird... its a lan card however there is a modem card in there supposedly too.. If this was a PC I could figure everything out but its a laptop.. Im new to that game

You have to turn OFF your rogers Modem, plug the cable into your laptop and turn modem ON .. wait a few seconds and it should work!
