I found an interesting read in my searching for linux information.
the reason I find it an interesting read is before I got interested
in linux what I heard was it was faster more stable and could
be used on older computers very well. but I have noticed that
with the distros I have tried I have found it to be bloated and slow.
yes, yes I understand that if you just run in terminal it is fast
but once you add a gui things really slow down. I have heard
of windows being called bloatware and with each new version
it gets bigger and requires a faster computer. is linux headed
the same way? not really looking for any answers here just
thought that you might find this interesting.

I have always felt that if Linux developed to be more like Windows for functionality, then it also would be "like Windows". You can always built a faster stripped-down car, but once you add the luxuries it will slow down and become bulky.

I run Linspire on one box and dual boot to Xandros on another - I find both slower to react than Windows (XP and Me).

To become accepted on the desktop Linux will have to be like Windows. To do that it won't be free. Both Linspire and Xandros comes with a price tag. The alternative OS is far from being available - except for Macs :)
