I am having trouble with my hard drive. My computer will be running fine and then all of the sudden, it will hang and the screen will go black. When I reboot my machine, it doesn’t detect the primary master or primary slave. But it does detect the CDR and XP would not load.

Then after a couple of hours, I would turn on my computer and it would work fine, even though I did not do anything to it.

I did some investigating and figured it might be a hard drive problem. So I checked the connection for my hard drive and made sure it was secure. I also went to the Western Digital web site and downloaded a program that performs a diagnosis of the drive. But it can’t complete because my computer will hang in the middle of the diagnosis. I tried to reinstall XP Pro, but it hangs in the middle of that process as well. Any help would be much appreciated….

Here are my specs:

XP Pro with Sp1 and updated with latest windows updates

Pentium 3 933MHZ

ASUS TUV4X S370 ATA-100

168 PIN SDRAM 512MB

Western Digital 40GB IDE ATA 100

LG CDR 12x8x32

you could try downloading wd low level formating tool, or try replacing the drive.

low level format is a last chance thing and just as likely to make a paper weight.
replaceing in the end may be the only option, but before that.

try replaceing the cable it may have gone bad.

also leave the side off to aviod any heat issues.

unhook everything but the the harddrive since bad cd roms and the like can causes issues.

and after all this try checking the drive again.
