View Full Version : Wireless Router
Hey TCM!!
I am in need to get a wireless router. The only problem I have is that I do not know a lot about wireless routers and what not. I have a desktop and 3 laptops at home, 1 with wireless adapter all other computers do not. Can anyone suggest any routers and wireless usb adaptars to use? Also 54mbps is not fast at all to me :| or is it? I am used to the 100mbps?
Thanks a lot,

All you will get right now through the air is 54 mbps. I'd recommend Linksys since I've not had any problems with their products, apart from using it too much.

also it will help to know if your Cable or DSL
I have rogers high speed. Will I be noticeable to see the difference in 100mbps and 54mbps when it comes down to surfing the net and doing the basic needs. Also with the wireless comes 4 plug-in type of connections, atleast the D-Link ones. Would those be 100mb/s?
Thanks a lot guys,

Thank you andyman for the link, I have read the page and come down to the conclusion that I would like to get a wireless router. I checked out tigerdirect.ca and found out that a Linksys wireless-G 54mbps router is 79.99 before tax and a D-Link 54mbps wireless-G router is 26.99 before tax. :rrg: My question is why is the D-Link so much cheaper then the Linksys. Does anyone have any good computer stores to purchase wireless products from? Tigerdirect had a good sale a couple of months ago where it was 20 dollars after mail in rebate and then you had a 20 dollar compnay mail in rebate so the router was actually free, to be exact you actually got money because it was 20 dollars U.S.. Just thought I would like to share :)

Rogers is a maximum or 5 mb/s (if you have Extreme), so no, you won't see any difference when surfing or downloading wirelessly.
Hardwired is the full 100 mb/s

As Dave Chalk says "D-Link... Link for less"
Personally, I like D-Link... but I'd stay away from there cheaper stuff... those are the ones that tend to have more problems ;)
But at the same time you could buy 3 of the cheap D-Link and keep replacing them as they break down for the same price as the 'better' D-Link or Linksys :)
I would rather go for performance and dish out the extra 50 dollars. I just took a look on ebay and found a couple of routers. Would you guys get a router from ebay?

Your cable speed is slower than the wireless connection, so there shouldn't be any difference in surfing speed (5000 kbps Extreme = 5 Mbps). Mine is a d-link extreme G (di-624), with dwl-520 adapters. The d-link di-624 firmware supports up to 108 Mbps speed, but I find the connection at that speed was good at close range (router one floor up and directly above) but flakey where the router was one floor down and 2 rooms over. However, at the 54 Mbps setting, it's perfectly stable in the second connection. I believe the ethernet connection (the 4 ports) is a 10/100 connection.
I bought the D-link router at Canada Computer refurbished and have had no problems with it, so all in all, the wireless setup was pretty inexpensive and has been problem free (except I haven't quite got it running in linux - use the ethernet part for now till I do). I can't get on the site for CC right now, so can't check the price, but I believe they still have the refurbished ones.
Yea I tried getting on CC's site and there page is down or something along those lines. I am debating wether or not to get a D-Link and the two network cards and save money or get the Linksys one and get performance, Just don't know

Performance isn't the issue... it's how well they last ;)
Personally, I'd stay away from the 500 series... the 600 series is pretty good though.
it's not like the Linksys has better performance than the D-Link...
If that was the case we'd be telling you to go Linksys...
So get a D-Link 600 series wireless router?

You should probably be fine with that. It's got good range and the performance is just fine. One of the biggest enemies of the routers is heat, so just make sure there's good air flow. The other thing is positioning. You may have to experiment a bit to get the best spot with the least obstructions. I can make small changes in position of both the router and antenna on the cards and get very different strengths. The farthest comp. generally gets about 56% strength, but the other is closer to 80%.
Okay, thanks sybil and everyone who helped me

When surfing the net you won’t see any difference, playing MP3’s from a Shared file on another computer will also work with no noticeable affect. Only doing loading large files (100+Meg) would you notice and real difference and that would be minimal.
