i was having trouble with my net going down last thursday. called bell and went through three steps of so called trouble shooting. they said all they could do was do more tests and call me back withing three days. after unplugging both modem and router several times it finally worked.
today i get...in the mail... a new modem kit called speedstream. my old one is an alcatel. the old one seems to work fine. is there any point in installing the new one with all the msn software?

Unplug your old one, plug in the new one, reboot everything, and you should be good to go.

Everything off first.

Reboot sequence:
Modem, router, computer. Let each sync before booting the next one.

Doesn't hurt anything to try. Simple "plug and use". If you don't like it you can just as easy switch back.

I dont blame you. Is that to upgrade to a new model? they shouldnt be chargeing you anything unless its the modem router? and thats only $69.95 =\

I had to many problems with Bell and went back to Rogers.

I had to many problems with Bell and went back to Rogers.i thinks it an upgrade to a new model unless i missunderstood. it would have been cool to have a new model but not for that much. when i was with rogers and had an older model modem, they told me the same thing. i guess its a money making scheme. :(

Yeah thats weird why they would charge you like that unless they tested it and found you were at fault for the repair? Rogers even swapped my old Webstar modem for this new one (Motorola) and never charged me anything

Not really unless you upgraded to a new plan? If you didnt ask for it I'd send it back at their expence , just call the buisness office and ask for a return kit and explain the situation :)

Thats really weird. Even when I upgraded to extreme I only had to pay a onetime fee and I own the modem =\

If you're not having any problems now, just return the speedstream. IMO the Alcatel modems are much more realiable.

The Speedsream is the new modem they are using to replace to old Nortel and Alcatel models. You should now receive faster speeds(3meg as compared to 1meg). I know this because they just upgraded mine also.
