For someone who has never used Linux, what will be the simplest version to get started and from where can it be downloaded? Is there a website which gives step by step instructions to install the software?
Thanks for the help.

If you want you can install mandriva (http://wwwnew.mandriva.com/en/downloads) and try this installation guide.

http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/installmdv2006.html

Another good easy distribution is ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/)

But one of the first things I suggest you to do is know how to install Windows XP from a CD and you got half the things figured out.

Xandros is along the same lines as linspire, they have a free torrent version for download. http://www.xandros.com/products/home/desktopoc/dsk_oc_download.html

give knoppix live a try. fits on a cd and is a bootable linux os, great for messing around and learning the ropes, also good for system recovery.

when you want a fully functional os, id go with fedora or suse.
