Hi folks

I need some suggestions. I have a friend in Ohio and I'm trying to help troubleshoot and give suggestions on things he can do to fix up his computer.

He got himself a nasty trojan and it seems to be gone. He has installed norton and his system is clean.

He also will be running adaware and spybot again (he has run in the past).

IE seems broken and he is running netscape, but he is having major java problems and things seem really slow.

I am heading there in 2 weeks to take software down and stuff....but I figured I would try things before the reformat/reinstall (which we are going to do over the phone when I get back home).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

Webby, also get him to download and run www.CCleaner.com, it'll clean up a lot of crap and free up mega disk space.

yes you do need the disk
I would also remove MS virtual Java and install the sun version

I think I'll get him to download firefox and install that

and then redownload java again......he doesn't do too much stuff.....so for online games and stuff it should be fine (it seems to work ok for me anyway)

here are the steps to uninstall Microsoft Java Virtual Machine
it does fix a few bugs and worth to do it.
.
From the Start menu, select Run.
Enter the command
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall
to start the uninstall process
Click Yes to the confirmation, then select Reboot.
After the machine restarts, delete the following items:
the \%systemroot%\java folder
java.pnf from the \%systemroot%\inf folder
jview.exe and wjview.exe from the \%systemroot%\system32 folder
The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM registry subkey
The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_VM registry subkey (to remove the Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) options)

Microsoft Java is now removed. You can download Sun's newer JVM for Windows at http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html.
