Ok, This machine has mostly used parts except for the new sata hdd, specs below.
I've checked most of the hardware, ie ran prime95 + other benchmarks on the cpu and ram. Used the seagate tool to scan the harddrive for defects, so it shouldn't be the hardware. Though it could be some underlying problem on the mobo or PSU.
I've searched for this issue on the net and it seems to be pretty common but I haven't found an actual fix for it yet.
The issue is that after applying sp4 on win2k or sp2 on winxp, the system will pause when loading windows but it will continue to load about a minute later(atleast for me) and it doesnt seem to have any other effects. When I safe boot, it shows it file 'mup.sys' is where it's hanging at, the last file that's loaded.
One solution that ppl suggested was by disabling mup while in the windows recover console. I tried it and the system still paused during startup, but not at mup.sys since it doesmt get loaded. Instead it's at the file that came before it, usually a graphics driver file.
Also, the problem seems to go away once in a while, eg. after I installed a new driver for my gf4 and rebooted, it loaded smoothly ONCE. Then if I reboot again, the problem is back.
I'm just thinking of running it as sp3 on win2k or sp2 on winxp. Is there any specific reason I would need the new sp?
If anyone knows a solution to this, I'd appreciate the help, thanks.
