Just FORMATED and installed Window 2000 Pro to a P3 HP computer. After config. and test it for Rogers Hi Speed internet. Now there are several messages pop up say something like the Register need to fix, there is something wrong with some setting, need to go to certain website to fix it etc...

The message pops up even we are not using IE.

We installed and ran Microsoft Antispyware Beta 1 with the latest update, ran Spybot and Adware. Ran the latest Window update and installed SP4. The messages still pop up.

I installed ZoneAlarm and AVG free editions on this computer.

I just in shock that we get this stuff so quickly.

Could this be a boot sector virus/spyware?

Anyone have any idea how to fix it?

Appreciate your input.

My first question would be, was Zonealarm and AVG installed "after" connecting to the internet or before? From past experience, I always install an updated firewall and updated AV before even looking at connecting to the net. It takes but a few seconds connected to be hit with all sorts of nasty stuff...ie...viruses...spyware

I knew it is not a good idea to do that "after". But I did do that "after". Just follow the Windows installation sequence. :(

This computer was infected with quite few "bugs" that is why I had to completely format it.

None of the anti-spywares I mentioned earlier detect anything. I asked the owner to do a on-line virus scan. I will see what is the result.

Thanks for answering.

Just a followup. She did an on-line virus scan, found and get rid of the bug. She can't tell me what is the name of the bug though.

It's a relief. Sure don't like to spend hours to reformat and install all the softwares again.
