Hi, I am currently networking two computers such that my Rogers Hi Speed internet and files are shared. The SMC7004ABR router I have now isn't that great and disconnects when I'm downloading a lot.

Is there a better brand of router that isn't too expensive that I should look for? (And is a router the ideal thing to use here, over a hub, switch, etc...?)

Thanks.

Hook the modem up directly to one of your machines to see if it's Rogers before messing around with the router.

I have had good luck with linksys.

Another option, at Future Shop is the D-Link ( DI-604 ) router $ 39.00 with $ 10.00 rebate.

D-Link or Liinksys routers

Just stay away from D-Link's 500 series routers... they have been problematic.

My linksys worked great till the warranty was over. My cheaper Dlink 604 has been working longer and has a better warranty.

I've found 2 routers that seem pretty good and just wanted some opinions:

- D-Link-604 (mentioned above) for $49.99 minus $10 rebate at futureshop

OR

- Linksys BEFSR41 router with built in switch for $40, barely used from an outside person http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?childpagename=US%2FLayout&packedargs=c%3DL_Product_C2%26cid%3D1115416832116&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper

Please make sure that the connection is working properly before you go and buy another router.

D-Link is okay - I set one up but definitely prefer linksys.

As stated above I would check your connection first before buying a new router. I have the same SMC router as you do and it is working fine. You may also want to update it to the newest firmware version, when I did it to mine it actually increased my download and upload speeds.

Is the newest firmware 1.015?

Linksys...Although mine is dying BUT I've pushed through it a lot of bits in 3 years so I am kinda expecting it not to last.
