Cannot go back when surfing

Folks: I have found when surfing I am not taken one screen back when I click on the green horizontal back arrow on the top left of my screen. Instead I am taken three and more steps back. For example when searching with Google, after going forward four screens and I click on the back arrow, I am taken to the original Google search screen and not the previous screen. This can be very annoying. Any ideas how I may fix this? Thanks a lot

what happens if you use the keyboard shortcuts in ie (backspace/alt+left arrow for back and alt+right arrow for forward)? what about when you select the page from the pulldown menu of your history (the smaller downward-pointing arrow next to the horizontal navigation arrows)?

Are you running some sort of popup blocker or a Hosts file?
