I have an issue with my Internet speed. AGAIN!!!!!!
I did have this problem before and we did discuss it here, but problem was solved, however it came back again.
I have Bell Sympatico Internet. About two months ago I had speed issue, where my speed went down from 300 kb/sec to 5 or 12 kb/sec. I called them, they couldn’t help me, I exchanged modems with my friend for a while and it worked fine. However few days ago it went bad again.
I called Bell, we went through all this deleting cookies and history and other crap. Didn’t help! Finally they said they will send me new modem. I got this modem today and it was fine for 2 hours maybe. Now it is down again to like 10 -20 kb/sec!
Now. Nothing changed in my house when it comes to the phones, computers. I have three computers and when I connect them all separately to the modem without even rougher, it is bad as hell. I am about to call them again, but I don’t see how can they help me now!
I am ready to cancel this service but I don’t know if I can get any better service from any other company for the same money.
Did any body had this problem!? Or may have an idea what to do, I am so sick and tired and pissed. Like never before.
You pay for the service for years, THOUSANDS of dollars and one day it goes bad and they don’t try to do much!!!
New modem is no better then the old one, they are saying when I call them that they can see that may modem is getting perfect signal, BUT I AM NOT!!!!!!
Help me! Tell me!

I had an issue with the speed and i did all that they told me. One thing the idiots didnt do was check there end. They finally checked there end and found the problem to be on there end and half of downtown toronto. They fixed there end and on my end i was finally getting the speed i needed.

One time I called them and they told me to go to download.sympatico.ca and download one of the drivers just to test the download speed. When my internet was good my download was between 250-300 kb/sec. Now it is between 5-15 kb/sec. It starts with 80 kb/sec and goes down to 5-15 kb/sec, where when it was good it started with 600 and went down to around 300 kb/sec.
One time I called them and we did this test and my speed was 35 or 38 kb/sec. They told me that this is right speed for high speed internet!!! I told them that I was always getting 300, they said that the range is from 30 to 300, so I shouldn’t complain!!!!!
How is that possible!?! You get the service 10 times slower but the monthly fee doesn’t change!!!
Anyway, I hope for some good ideas and direction as to what should I do.

LOLOOL, 30 - 300k thats a Joke, if you hear something like that you ask to speak to their manager and tell their manager that they are stupid and need to be retrained.
-Have you tried a different phone jack?
-Maybe even try a phone jack in your basment as it will be closer to the point of entry for your phone line.
-Umm try turning off ur modem for 2min turn it back on.
-Remove all Phones in the house so there is nothing hooked up to your phone line But your DSL modem
-Maybe try without a Router/Hub if your using one.
See if any of that helps i just named off whatever came to my head.
Hope it helps.

My modem is connected in the basement for last 3 years, as well as all the phones in the house. I did turn off the modem for even more then 2 minutes.

See, it works perfect when I come back home around this time and start going on the net, but in hour or so (pending how much I will use it) it goes down to the lowest possible ~5kb/sec

Hmm, now is your modem left on all day and night or do you jsut turn it on when you get home?? Reason why I ask is because if you were to turn it off when u get home u turn it on and within that hour of use it Could be over heating or something like that its just a guess probably wrong but thats just what came to my mind.
Good luck,

Some of them do over heat when I had sympatico the modem they gave me was practicly a foot warmer the only problem I had was disconnects & DNS issues......Does the speed only drop at night? I tend to think this could be a distance issue.

No i don't turn my modem off, only to restart when it's really bad. When i do restart it it seems to work fine for couple of minutes, but then it goes bad again.
I know it happens in the evening, but i have no chance to test it doring the day.
I got new one and i have the same problem, so i don't think it's the modem, unless both of them old and new are screwed.
What speed to you guys get with hight speed bell or rogers or other ISPs?

This is starting to sould like it might be your network card might be having issues.
Isn't there and day that you're not working (weekend) that you use it during the day?
Time of day shouldn't be an issue when you're on DSL... since you aren't sharing the line with everyone on your area like you do with cable.

My comps are off when i am not home, i leave modem on. It is not my network card for sure i have three computers and i did connect them all separatelly to the modem and same thing, that's why i know it is not my network card. :mbx:

I had the same problem, I believe my thread is still up here. But mine got fixed on their end, now its back to my normal of around 1 mbit down and 130 kbits up (most likely my distance from the CO). I still need to phone them back to verify that.
But do like others suggested, turn your modem off when you arent using it. Also, if you are going to call Bell again, try and talk to the 2nd level tech guys, they are more helpful. Just tell them that you went through all the stuff before with the other tech people and tell them to run a line test and such, and all the other stuff you have tried (different phone jacks, resetting modems...) . Make sure you tell them to check their end of things to.

I had a speed issue with Sympatico for a couple of months and i think i did a trace route or something like that and they found one server to be odd. But really they didnt do anything till i asked them over and over to check there end. They finally checked there end and found other people in toronto were having the same issue. Now i got a fast connection that is stable.

Are you using the speedsteam 5200? May need a firmware update.
This from DSLreports:
Q: Where can I obtain updated firmware for the 5200? (#10124)
A: There are problems with some versions of the Speedstream 5200 modem. The main symptom experienced is not being able to surf the web, requiring a power-cycle of the modem (several times each week or even several times a day) to re-obtain a good connection.
Sympatico has released a firmware update for some versions of the 5200 to address this issue. If it says "no update required" then it means your modem doesn't need this update. Get it here:

As far as I know, it is.
When they upgraded my modem to the 5200 I had no connection for almost 3 weeks, and tried everything imaginable. Spoke with at least 10 different people at Sympatico, had the lines tested and still nothing. I finally got my dial-up to work and searched Google and found that there was a firmware upgrade, even after I questioned the second level techs. I then called Sympatico back and told them, boy where they suprised. Gotta love their tech support.
