did you install any drivers on pc b? that is probably why it wont work, windows needs to know what it is, you could check in the device manager to see if you have any unknown devices (if you do one will most likely be the printer).

What is the OS, are you a local administrator?

What was the OS on PC a, it might be possible that there you don't have the correct driver for it to run on win XP. try going to the manufacturers website and look the printer up. They may have an updated driver for you

there is nothing on the site for win xp. I went to epson and my printer is a stylus 740. Could it be from the plug 9 pin that is not connected to the board?

With USB connected printers, it seems that, in many cases, unless the OS supports the printer, you MUST install printer drivers BEFORE the printer is even attached. If the printer was attached before the drivers were installed, an incorrect recognition/installation can result and a specified procedure has to be followed before you can even start to load the drivers. If this procedure is not followed, you may never get it to work on that PC.
This is certainly a case, where the manufacturers instructions have to be followed to the letter.

Neil is on to something with his answer.... In the past I have had people install that particular printer and then install the drivers and it WILL NOT WORK with the USB connection. There are two fixes though.

One you can just go into the registry and delete EVERY MENTION OF EPSON. Then reinstall the drivers and attach the printer. Of course you will also have to reinstall any drivers for ANY EPSON device as well. This method is not for the faint of heart and you MUST BACKUP any important files that you want to to keep just in case you delete something that damages the registry, which despite Microsoft's claims pretty much requires a reinstall of the OS to fix a damaged registry in anything but XP. (If you pay attention though and just delete epson entries in the registry all should be well as I have done this on 4 different computers quite successfully)

Two you can go into control panel, printers, select the the 740 icon then go to properties and find out which port the printer is supposed to work on. Change it so Epson USB port is the port for the printer. You might have to do this a couple of times to force it to work on the USB port.... Sorry I can't be more specific about how to get to the port settings to do it but if you select the printer and properties it should be fairly easy to figure out.

Apparrently, some printer manufacturers thoughtfully provide a little routine to run, should you get yourself into this situation, it does all the hard work for you without deleting anything you shouldn't.

So it is always a good idea to have a look on the manufacturers website - not only might they have the solution, they might save you a lot of time.
