DVD to AVI

I'd like to know, what is the best, or simplest way to take a DVD or DVD image or whatever and turn it into an .AVI file?

i tried dvdx (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=72208) and it seemed to do a good job. I think its still free, but I cant confirm this as I use CinemaCraft Encoder Pro now

Great, I'll give that a try. I've try searching and everything I found wanted to take an AVI file and make it a DVD. Guess I want to do oppisite of what everyone else wants.

Search using DVD ripper as your keywords.
