I have game demos the kids have downloaded into my download file...they have been deleted from the add and remove list but the zip file cannot be deleted ....I says it is protected or running in background. What can I do to get rid of it.
Start the machine in Safe Mode and try again :)

Right-click on the zip file and check the properties, including Advanced. If the archive "box" is enabled, change that and apply the new settings. The file should be able to be deleted now.

As a FYI, the archive bit has no affect on the ability to delete or manipulate files. It is strictly a "switch" that can be used by backup programs to indicate that a file "should" be archived (backed up).
If you can't delete the file in safe mode, try one of the following:
1. Download KillBox. http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip
Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it.
In the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste the full path to the file.
Now put a tick by Delete on reboot.
Click on the button with the red circle with the X. It will ask for confirmation. Click yes.
Reboot
2. Run DelInvFile.exe at the bottom of this page (http://www.purgeie.com/delinv.htm)

Sorry to disagree, but my experience has shown otherwise.

Try this utility:
Delete Doctor 2.1
Delete files that are difficult to delete, such as some files left by viruses and trojans, or files with corrupted file names.

Find the file in Explorer. Right click and choose "Properties". Uncheck the "Read Only" box if it is checked and then click "Apply". In most instances you will then be able to delete the file.
You could also boot into DOS and see if you can delete it that way if Windows still refuses to delete it.
