What do you guys think?

Not a bad system or price for that matter, probably because there's no real upgradablility other then the video card for that system

Its the older socket 754, not the newer socket 939, it doesn't mention whether the memory is dual channel or not, this could be a big bottle neck if its not dual channel. Personally, I wouldn't buy the system, but that doesn't mean its bad or not for you. I prefer to choose my components seperately and build it myself. Have you read up on the motherboard, are there favourable reviews?

Thanks for the feedback. I tried to look up the prices on canadacomputer.com but I couldn't find that motherboard listed. I think it's an older motherboard. I read the description on tigerdirect and it seems decent.
I don't think the RAM is dual channel. I don't know much about the difference between dual channel and standard. Is there a big difference in performance?

Yes, there is a huge diffference in performance. You are getting a fast CPU with a fast bus, but it will all be held back if the memory is single channel. I don't think there is any question you money could be better spent, the question is do you want to work at it and either pay someone to put it together or do it yourself. Why don't you visit Les's shop?

A friend of mine is thinking about getting this PC. He will use it mostly for Games, basic software apps and basic Internet apps. Les is too far from where we live.

So are you physically going to Tigerdirect then? I don't like them, I think their prices are too high.

Its a decent system for word processing and office apps, however for games that vid card is a huuuuuuuuge bottleneck. Socket 754 does not support dual channel so it would be a single channel ram config only. here is an article about dual and single channel on the athlon 64 platform, they are using a socket 939 board but it shouldn't matter, it shows very little performance increase (except in benchmark tests) using dual channel http://www.tcmagazine.info/articles.php?action=show&id=128&perpage=1&pagenum=13 this is the last page (conclusion) of the article. Also I believe that amd will be using a completely different socket by the middle of next year so either way it will be a moot point on the upgradability as the 939's will only be slightly faster (unless you wanna eventually go dual core). I would still reccomend a socket 939 system, however for the price the one in the link seems dedcent.

He will go pick it up if he decides to buy it. I usually check out the prices at **** or Canada Computers. Which computer stores do you like the most?

Thanks for that link and information. I wasn't aware AMD would be coming out with a new socket in the next year or so. That video card definitely has to be upgraded but I'm not sure about the motherboard.
The difference between single channel and dual channel "is minimal" because it is incorporated into the rating scheme. If you were to compare chips of equal clock speed and architecture; yes, there would be a significant difference.
If you're spending the money on a new computer, you might as well spend a little bit more and get something which can be upgraded. They are always changing sockets ( ), so don't bother waiting for the next one.

For retail price checks, PriceNetwork (http://www.pricenetwork.ca)
Definitely a budget system and components, consisting of generic components with the exception of the processor and mobo...
