hmmm ... i just got an interesting email from rogers about a mcafee program i apparently downloaded from an online p2p sharing program (warez). It said about how it infringes canadian law .... anyways, first of all are they allowed to do that, know wut im downloading and everything, isnt that sort of a privacy infringement or some type of spyware lol. And i thought you cant get in trouble from p2p sharing programs because u are recieving files from other users, not a direct source...

While I am against illegal pirated software, I am also appalled to think that a private company can monitor your usage to that degree. I would consider this an invasion of privacy. You pay them for the service to access the Internet, not regulate what you do on it. Was this personally addressed to you?

I may not like it but the truth is or at least I believe the internet is not private.
with that said they should not have the right to have access to your browsing
habits. Now again with that said if Rogers was held responsible for the browsing
habits of the customers they have there soon would be no rogers high speed
all the profits would go to law suits. against them.
I am in no way condoning or condemning sharing files.
its just my small opinion.
take it for what it is.
oh yes ps I don't have Rogers ---any thing---

yea .. it was personally addressed to me. It said the time i downloaded the file, the program used to download it, the port number, the ips. etc. I thought its illegal to invade privacy, cuz that basically means they can watch wut i do all the time (lol and gather my personal information ... like a hacker)!!! Any advice on wut to do, im thinking of switching isp but i like the speed of rogers, i had bell b4 and it was too slow...

But you pay a toll to use the 407 - does that mean they can be sued if you cause an accident? Rogers provides a service - access to the Internet. If they want to restrict their service, and block certain websites, then that is at their discretion for "service offerings". It would soon diminish their client base. But to monitor downloads, and notify a user of, what they feel, is illegal, is a privacy invasion. That now means that a record has been kept of this "illegal" activity, monitored without prior notification to the client. Even the police cannot telephone wire-tap, or monitor your web usage, without a warrant to do so.
If this has really happened (we are only going on a forum posting), then Rogers has crossed the line, and most likely committed an illegal act themselves by way of this privacy invasion.
Illegal activity, or not, by any user/customer of Rogers service, does not warrant Rogers to act as a "peeping Tom".

lol .... i wonder if i could sue them. it would prob cost too much anyways

Out of curiosity, what p2p program were you using when you downloaded it, were you using BT?

Not worth any effort, and, if you did download pirated software, as they imply, it would be like a bank robber suing the bank because he broke his ankle during the escape ... LOL
I would send an email to Rogers' management requesting "under what authority" did they invade your privacy. This is a heated issue these days, and needs to be fully addressed before Big Brother becomes a reality.
I fully agree that police, and other law enforcement agencies, should be able to obtain warrants under "just cause", to monitor Internet activity, the same way as tapping a phone line. But unwarranted selected or random access to a user's online surfing, would be the same as walking into your house, at any time, without "just cause" and searching it - hoping to find something.

Rogers wasn't the one monitoring your moves... it was someone else that goes around in these p2p programs and makes notes of who's downloading and uploading what, what they're ISP and IP is, and then they'll contact the ISP and tell them about your illegal activities.
In any ISP's EUA it says that you won't use their service for illegal activities, so at this point they have every right to terminate your service.
You might want to think about using a proxy service for downloading these things from now on ;)

If one is going to engage in this type of "activity" then the best advice besides don't download anything is this... download said file, don't share it... immediately burn it on to a disc and remove it from your hard drive.

can you be sure it was Rogers who wrote that in the first place? We've had a spate of dumb msgs around here (Edmonton) from hoo-nose-where sounding like ISPs with full-mailbox notices, complaints about spamming activities etc that had nothing to do with our cable or ADSL servers, ...they had "administrator.telus.com" or "team.shaw.com" type of addresses that clearly weren't legit, ...just a thought ...

Yeah Right. I ahve almost Gone Over my 60 Gig cap with Rogers, and they havent sent anything to me *giggles* "Like They Should, Im so, Uh, Innocent". I think Its bogus. Oh well, If Rogers DOES Monitor What We Are doing, Your best Bet (instead of Switching IPs) Is Unplug Your Computer and Throw It Out The Window.
If you Havent Figured this out you probably should. The Thing about the Internet is - EVERYONE IS WATCHING.
Look Up Big Brother at Google.

I wouldn't quite laugh at that. If someone breaks into your house & you beat the living crap out of them, they can take you to court for assault & battery.
If you kill a home invader, you think you get off scott free because you were defending yourself?
Same with the bank robber if he were to trip on a rug or slip on wet floors, he could sue. It's been done & even though they were doing something illegal, they're still in the right to sue.
As for the rogers email, email address can be spoofed so to know for sure, check the full headers.

now that u mention that, there was no rogers header. .. the email addresss was abuse@rogers.com .... and all the writing in seemed weird, sort of like when u get a forward from someone and all the paragraphs are justified to the center. anyways, the emails were sent to every rogers email that was connected to the primary account, could that also be a sign.

Yep, just as before.... 99% sure that didn't even come from Rogers...
More than likely came from these people that claim to be "ware Alliance (BSA) and The Canadian Alliance Against Software Theft (CAAST)"
Whoever they are... if they are real or not, I don't know.... and how they get all your Rogers e-mail addresses is beyond me... :tch:

This might sound stupid, but could you explain how to do this?
I've tried before, but with no luck. My IP keeps showing.
I run through a Dlink Dl-614+ router.

Sorry dbg, but I'm not really up on proxy servers myself...
But in general, you're using another network other than your ISP's....
You might want to google it and see what you can come up with ;)
