What are the documents that should be kept in the car? And which can be copies and which have to be originals?

Thanks.

I wouldn't keep any documents in the car - especially ownership, insurance, and driver's licence. I wouldn't keep photocopies either.

I keep those in my wallet at all times.

Those documents, if they should end up in the wrong hands, could result in identity theft.

Copies of the ownership and liability certificate are all you need.

Plus your original driver's licence, of course.

I would say to keep an original insurance card in there( they usually send you about 10 of the bloody things anyways) and a photocopy of the registration. NEVER keep the original ownership in the car. If someone is driving your car without you in it, let them know what is in the glovebox just in case they are stopped for whatever reason. Check with your local police to be 100% sure that a photocopy of the registration will be fine if someone is asked while driving your vehicle. Also, never leave your drivers licence in there.

edit: The reason I say this is only if you have others driving your car while not with them....just to be clear.

Well of course on the driver's licence. Just a note to always have the original with you when driving. Not a copy.

Only things I leave in the car are:

(1) Perly's map book
(2) A few CD's I plan on listening to (no more than 2 or 3 at a time) and
(3) The owner's manual

That's it :)

Definitely not. Anything with your name, address and other personal ID should never ever be left in your car.

I just leave a photocpoy of my ownership and and insurance in my cars. Drivers license stays in my wallet.

As an aside, why can't the insurance card be made credit card sized? I used to keep them in my wallet but have been told about 5 times by police officers that I'm not allowed to fold it up becuase the fold marks can make it hard to read.

So you have been pulled over atleast 5 times? LOL. I'm 32, and have been 'pulled over' once, when I was 18. What are you doing to make yourself such a target? Or how many accidents do you get involved in? Me, not a one.

I'm 49, been driving for over 32 years, and have had to pull my insurance certificate out of my wallet a half dozen times over the years for Metro's Finest and have never been given that line lol.

Ownership and insurance stays in the car. Driver's licence in my wallet. I'm the only driver of my car.

Anyone here keep a camera in the glovebox? I've been thinking of getting a cheap disposable one for that purpose.

The trunk might be a better idea.

The heat in the passenger compartment this time of the year would probably kill the film.

I wouldn't keep it in my trunk just cause the bass from my subs would probly send the camera flying around the trunk compartment :P

If you carry a photocopy of your ownership it must have a copy of the validation sticker on the back or it is not a legal copy of the ownership. The numbers on that sticker match the sticker on your plate

No accidents and no tickets. Sometimes they ask for license and registration at a RIDE check just to see if you have it I guess. Never happens in the winter though I guess they want to spend as little time outside as possible.

The only documents which should be left in a car are those which should be displayed at all times (ie tax disk in the UK). So perhaps the question is wrong - and should be 'What documents should the DRIVER carry?'
