How do I open a rarred exe in vmplayer (ubuntu OS). I've tried rar for linux but it didn't work - I searched thru the vm groups but came up with nada...or maybe I just didn't understand the lingo lol. Anyone have some pointers for me. I really want to change over to linux but I don't have a tech background so a lot of the jargon is over my head...I'm learning but I need a basic foundation that I can build on. :rrg:

EXEs are executable files used under windows and DOS. They don't work in Linux without a special program for emulation because those files are generally programs or run something.

If you mean rar compressed self-extracting exe, then rar for linux should be able to decompress it... keyword *should* :)
If it cannot, I don't think anything else will.

:hiya: Ok thanks for replying guys. I've been reading about emulators and would like to know if WINE fits into this category and if so could I install that on my virtual machine then open the exe? I attempted the "rar for linux" installation but I may have screwed it up (that is sooooo possible lol).
Another question re text installers -- do I copy and paste them to a specific place in the virtual machine. Thinking back I'm not sure if the "rar for linux" was a text installer or not. :hsh:
I have a lot to learn about linux but it's turning into a fun hobby although a little frustrating at times hehe! Thanks again for sharing ur knowledge.
