Generally in IRC you have to wait in line to download and your download speed is dependent on the upload speed of the person who you are downloading from.

IRC is safe if you know what to look for... i've never had a serious virus through xdcc. I liked torrents alot better when they had good sites. but now I download less and less just because I don't want to be bothered searching.

for speed wise. I know good irc chans that max out my download speed if they have what I want. Torrents always have what you want, just paying the price of a slower download speed or trackers going down

pros in my view
IRC - Viruses (sometimes to never), usually can get your max download speed
cons (can't always find what you want, little more difficult to master (not user friendly)

pros
torrents - no viruses yet, very good selection of downloads, very user friendly
cons (hard to get max download speed, sometimes trackers go down and takes a while for torrents to download)

OMG I used to use irc years and years ago for getting stuff, people still use it? Personally finding stuff on torrent sites is easy, how do you find it on IRC? Same old logon to this ftp, browse, queue it up and go to bed hoping it will download? No thanks, torrents are safer and more secure, and easier to find.

IRC is becoming more user friendly with new programs coming out. I saw one program can't remember the name where it acted more like torrent apps for using IRC.

I used to use IRC a lot before torrents kicked off. I found it much harder to get files you wanted because your constantly dealing with disconnects, long que lines, Bots disconnecting.

Finding files on IRC is just as easy as it is on torrents which is a plus for it. The trick is finding good channels with decent bots and you can usually get what your looking for.
