I'm looking to add another HD to my DNS-323 network enclosure. There is a 500 Gb in there right now. Considering the following 2TB drives:

Western Digital Caviar Black (WD2001FASS) 2000GB (2TB) SATAII 7200RPM 64MB Cache (OEM)
$ 174.99 @ Canada Computers

Western Digital Caviar Green (WD20EARS) 2000GB (2TB) SATA 3 Gb/s 64MB (OEM)
$ 109.99 @ Canada Computers

The network is Gigabit and Wireless G/N. Using a DIR-655 router.

Will there be a noticeable performance difference between the Black and Green drives over the network? Should I save some money and get the Green as opposed to the Black? Or is it better to get two Green's and config them to RAID 1?

The main data being transferred are very large audio files. I do a lot of audio recording / editing.

Another question about the DNS-323. I'm currently using Firmware 1.05 which supports the ext2 filesystem. More recent firmware versions support ext3. Would it be beneficial to change to ext3 for the new drive(s) I'm going to buy?

I hope someone out there knows what im talking about cause im not exactly sure how to explain the noise other then what ive read on google what other people have problems.

The computer is give or take 4 years old and still runs perfectly and just yesterday i get this noise when i turn the computer on. Its a bit annoying cause its affecting my ear drums a bit as the noise is bothering them.

Anyone heard of this problem with the computer case im having? I opened up the computer and looked and it doesnt look like anything is damaged and the fans are working fine.

So maybe someone out there had the same problem or know someone that does and knows what the issue is?

was going to send failed HD under warranty to Seagate. Only problem I have is they supposedly want me to pay for shipping both ways (about 45 dollars total). The website in USA says they provide express shipping if you leave your credit card # but when I get to the end of RMA policy to give number, a nice little note tells me that this feature is not available in Canada and they only accept payment from Visa issued from an American bank. Yet, the shipping destination is to Burlington Ontario but 411 operator has no phone number listed. Personally, I'm not very pleased with Seagate service. I returned a Western Digital last week and they shipped it today, free. If anyone can tell me how to contact Seagate in Toronto area would be appreciated, thanks.
Fyi: Seagate owns Maxtor too.

Still shopping and since my other original post in July, I figured I'd wait it out until the back to school sales time. Larger screens have my interest since this is a desktop replacement.

Here is what I'm looking at:

Acer 18.4" Intel Core i5-430M Laptop (AS8943G-3215) - Silver $1099
http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/produ...ddd5f7ae8aen02

Samsung 17.3" Intel Core i5 430M Laptop (R780) $999
http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/produ...f7c0d49b84en02

Toshiba Satellite 17.3" Laptop featuring Intel Core i3-350M Processor (L670-011) $749
http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/...Tab_custReview

All of these laptops are units my eyes have migrated to from this original interest:

Toshiba Satellite 15.6" Intel Core i3-350M Laptop (L655-03F) - Grey $749
http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/produ...d45f4d7936en02

I was originally interested in the above Toshiba L655 but for the same price, I can get a larger screen Toshiba. That got me looking around and I have kept my eyes open for a laptop with a larger screen. The Acer and Samsung have faster CPU's and dedicated video. My uses are a mix of everything. Internet, word, spreadsheet, photo, audio and video editing (old VHS-C tapes + perhaps HD video tinkering), dvd's and maybe blu-ray through an external drive. I suppose Acer has had less than spectacular reliability in the past, but, this is a higher end model, and some say Acer's higher end models are better. I only wish the Samsung had the 18.4" screen. High-School & University/College etc is coming for many folks, so I have my eye on the laptops and am planning to buy during the back to school sales, or at least buy within the 30 days to price match any sales.

Any thoughts on these 3 units?
