They know that they will still have line ups to get the phones with these plans.

Pricey... even with the cheapest plan, most people want caller id and voice mail ($10)... and since the evenings start at 9pm (AFAIK) you'll need that $20 package if you want to bring that time down to 6PM. So, you're looking at $70-80 plus access fee, plus tax.

As with any novelty product, companies charge what the market will bear at the outset in order to maximize revenues - nothing new there.

This is especially true of companies like Rogers, who enjoy a near-monopoly status.

I've said all I really need to say about it here. I'm thoroughly disappointed -- and sadly, not surprised. I had held out some small glimmer of hope that Rogers would take a smart cue from AT&T, but Teddy-boy continues to prove that he remains shockingly clueless and greedy.

Perhaps Rogers wants to keep the blackberry at the leading edge since it is favoured by corporate pc drone types.

Wow, I missed this. What a steaming pile. "Better than some." We are not freakin' France. Besides, France has outlawed mandatory carrier locking. Answer that one, Ted.

And Rogers could very, very easily offer AT&T-like plans here. In fact, if they did, they'd win huge. Adoption rates would be insane, and iPhone users are, on the whole, three times as likely to consume mobile data than any other mobile user.

That article just proves Rogers has a tragic lack of clues.

Hardcore Crackberry addicts A) are a vanishingly small subset of their subscriber base, and B) consume a fraction of the amount of data compared to iPhone users.

They are too insulated, fat and greedy to care,
Time for the spectrum auction to bring in some foreign competition.

Perhaps, but I know many crackbery users who don't care about the costs, because their company picks up the tab.

all Canadians, besides writing to rogers, please fill out this form

Just sent an online complaint to the Competition Bureau and called them to make sure they got it! They did, and they said I'm not the first one today to be contacting them about the ridiculous pricing !

I also agree, by not buying the iPhone it is one of the smartest ways to make them change their plans and get a grip on reality!

"I suggest you write your local newspaper/media outlet/tech reporter about this and how unhappy you are. These people are the only ones who will get the message out to the masses as how unhappy the customer base is. Roger/Fido will have no choice but to listen to the customer if a newspaper like the Globe or any of the Sun media outlets publishes a negative article against the company about the customer complaints. "

At the end of the day Rogers knows people will still pay these prices, what other choice do they have.

I don't get what the Competition Bureau has to do with this. A cell phone is a luxury item and you can get them much cheaper elsewhere (granted it's not an iPhone).

My BlackBerry plan costs me $97 (taxes included) and that includes unlimted data and it's a much better plan than any of the Rogers plans.

    - 800 local minutes
    - 300 long distance minutes in North America
    - unlimited local calling evenings and weekends (5pm - 9am)
    - umlimited Telus to Telus calling
    - unlimted calling to any 5 numbers in Canada
    - unlimited text messages
    - unlimited data
    - unlimited email
    - caller ID
    - call waiting
    - conference calling
    - voice mail

As I mentioned perviously, Telus has an unlimited everything plan for $45 a month. They have an umlimited data plan for $45 a month. They have cheaper ones but it is umlimited email or unlimited data and other variations.

Waaaaay too much money for either a Blackberry or an I-phone. We need to keep things in perspective in this "Gimme all, gimme now" society. 12 years ago or so none of us had a cell phone at all, and somehow life found a way. Business got taken care of, and social lives were thriving. To now pay $100 a month on top of insane purchase prices to text friends and play music and crummy little screened versions of pac-man is insane. If drones stopped buying these things like they were needed.. companies like Apple would sell them dirt cheap, and providers would offer monthly plans for peanuts.

Telus is CDMA though. Can't use an iPhone there, or any phone worth browsing the web with for that matter, so it's kinda moot.

You answered your own question. The competition bureau is designed to prevent virtual monopolies from abusing their market position -- engaging in anticompetitive practices, which is what Rogers is doing.

My question is if you can legally purchase the phone without the plan and just swap the sim-card from an exisitng rogers phone??

I understand the iphone can communicate at hot spots so ya could use the built in browser to check email accounts.

Yes, Telus is CDMA so you can't use the iPhone on its network. My point was that other companies offer similar products with unlimited data plans. Why doesn't Rogers?

Rogers isn't a monopoly or engaging in anti competitive practices in my opinion. There are other similar providers to choose from and even Rogers offers other products to choose from that will do more or less the same thing.

The rates are getting slightly better... but yeah, still a far cry from what they should be.

I donno what the carriers are thinking.

They are a GSM monopoly, now that they own the only other GSM provider that isn't an MVNO, and when it comes to mobile technology, that makes an important difference. It probably doesn't really matter in the eyes of the CRTC, but it's walking a fine line.

That's true but the "monopoly" charge means that they are actively preventing people from getting into the business. That was the problem with Standard Oil in the early parts of the 1900s and that's what MS was accused of in the 1990s. The courts don't care that their the only GSM provider, they will say there are other cell phone providers out there for you to choose from. As well, no one is accusing Rogers from preventing them from converting to GSM.

So, while yes they do meet that narrow definition of a monopoly, they do not come close to meeting the requirements to take legal action against them.
