Thread: Connection tv to computer

    Default Connection tv to computer

I am wondering what type of connection people use to join tv to computer. What I am thinking about doing is watching Readon player (International channel) on computer and transferring (streaming) them to my Samsung LCD HDTV. There are other software with 1000 channel which I might use to stream to TV.

    1) Best solution would be to use HDMI cable. Since I am not in the same room. I would have to route the HDMI cable up the wall, down the wall (concrete block) though the wall unit. Bottom line HDMI cable wound have to be long, not the best choice.

2)Samsung LinkStick wireless LAN adapter or Rosewell RNX-NI Wireless USB dongle. I don't think this allow me to do what I planning on doing.

    3)Powerline Ethernet
TP-Link TL-PA211 Kit 200Mbps Mini Powerline Ethernet Adapter
This is basically two adapter that plugs into the wall and uses Powerline as a data transfer method. I have no idea if it can carry audio. Do you need seperate Wire?

4)Have D-Link Di-524 802.11g/2.4GHz Wireless Router is this good enough or do I need a more recent router.

5)Someone on TCM pointed out they brought a unit from Costco that allowed to do what I planning on doing. It was also good for Playstation attachment. What was that unit called? Don't remember, but I assume it was wireless. The old thread is lost.

6)Should I forget about it, it's not worth it. Poor reception on tv?

Any input would be great, just doing research.

Are you planing to use it as a monitor or do you just want to play movies and the like on it from the computer?

Currently, I am just thinking about movies and tv programs. I don't see myself typing on keyboard from the sofa. There was a Word tutorial disc, I played it on a DVD player the resolution wasn't all that sharp. Maybe I didn't have the TV set for it correctly resolution wise.

The simplest way to do this and leave the computer where it is and to buy a media player like the Wd tv live.
Asuming you internet plugged into a wireless router you can play anything on the computer on the tv through the box.

    Thanks for the suggestion!
WD TV Live Streaming media player, Wi-Fi Full -HD 1080P DLANA does look good in intial stage. I watched a Youtube video 17Min 57Sec on it. It said Window 7 won't allow streaming. Sure it will let you in on Youtube and other designated site. The video kept harping on playing saved file, which is good but not what I wanted. Basically they are waiting for Firmware update to solve the problem of streaming. Maybe it connect with XP Pro, who knows. While back I read about WD tv, boxee and Roku, they have certainly advanced in product design, but not everthing has been worked out to perfection.

OK, I will think about buying WD TV Live. Presently I concerned about finishing building my computer. I brought 16GB of G Skill Ripjaw X Ram and i5 -2500K CPU. Now concentrating on Motherboard ASUS P8Z68 -V Pro if the price is right. This Motherboard is highly regarded by Computer Magazine. I saw another motherboard with similar name ASUS P8Z68 -V Pro Gen 3. I did a little research on Gen 3 and it turns out that it would allow me to use the latest video card that are coming out. Basically 3.0 I think. Is it worth it to spend little extra cash go for Gen 3 or go with plain Pro? I am thinking about overclocking later on. By the way video card I plan on using is XFX 5770 HD which is old

Just my thinking, Patriot Boxoffice is primarly geared toward North American market. Whereas WD TV Live is selling in Asia and most likely europe. If a product succeed in Asia and Europe, it is most likely a good product. I could be wrong, the Western Digital Hard Drive I had 500GB burnt out on me. I am saying if 50 Helen agree then I agree.

Back to WD TV Live. Just out of curiousity, does it require Wi-Fi Wireless adapter (stick, dongle)? My assumption is that it Built-in into the product. Previous one had adapter I presume purchased seperately. Additional cost.

My thinking is exactly like your go with 3 Gen motherboard. But computer magazine says popular board is plain Pro. Computer Magazine is current issue, so I assume they had some idea of 3 Gen. Many people had reviewed Pro motherboard compared to 3 Gen. There could be some drawback with 3 Gen relative to Pro. But I see none. A person on another forum complained that it didn't have sufficient USB download speed. And another complained it had buzzing sound from speakers.

Out of curiousity, when your streaming video is picture excellent or half way or bad. Not saying Netflix site. I know most people have done streaming already, I am lagging way behind. Just fun to learn.

Video streaming from websites is excellent [I like podcast videos from places like Hak5, HD Nation, Tekzilla etc] and many are HD.
Streaming video from my Vortexbox server works great also. Definitely be sure you get a box that supports HD and Wireless N.
