Default Windows 8 looks to be another MS failure

The Windows 8 Consumer Preview came out to day and its clear MS just hasn't learned anything.

They are seriously trying to shove the new metro ui down peoples throats .

From a business stand point they wont upgrade to windows 8 and deal with this new ui.

From a home user stand point there just isn't any solid reason for a person to upgrade from windows 7
Nothing about windows 8 really stands out as a must have new feature
On a tablet the ui is slick and fast but on a pc is disjointed and confused.

At windows 8 core there nothing wrong and infact much good about it.
Starts faster then any OS and has no really hardware or driver issues to speak of.

But a faster boot isn't enough of a reason to upgrade and windows 7 is already rock solid and without any issues to speak of.

MS just doesn't seem to get the idea that a UI thats great on one device isn't necessarily a great idea on every device.

Of course we also got famous pricing scheme which frankly makes no sense at all.
There should be a business version and a home user version and thats it
A person shouldn't need to pay more for options like bit locker.

Ever since windows ME I think alot of the times Microsoft is under pressure to release operating systems from developers

I found windows 98 SE and windows 2k windows xp were the most stable

Don't get a new computer. Resurect the old one by running a Linux system! Lubuntu works great on old PC's

Also - Windows 8 when I looked at the developer version last month is copying a little from Linux [Ubuntu's Unity]
    Running Manjaro 0.8.3 64 Bit

You'd think they'd try to pick good things to "copy". Unity is the most God awful thing I have ever experienced in an OS...I will use new distros before I will be forced into that train wreck.

I still wish I was sometimes...using Windows 7 Home now (it came loaded), but really, really liked XP. 7 is OK, but I won't be in a hurry to use 8....

Linux Mint is usually a popular alternative for those annoyed with Unity.

It's dreadful unless you have a touch screen. Windows 7 is stable, fast and a joy to use. I won't be getting Windows 8.

i have it installed and it is working fine. The new interface is useless on a desktop, but I can see it as nice for a tablet. For me personally, since I would never purchase a windows based tablet or phone, there is no reason for me to upgrade from 7.

I'm still running XP and while I suspect that some day I will upgrade to something, (7..8, what ever comes next) I really don't have a need to right now. Frankly there isn't much more to be offered with the new OS that Win98 didn't offer outside of hardware support. The biggest problem with a new OS is learning where are the exact same functions are now located and what they have been renamed to. There are so many cool things that Microsoft could do to make Windows better other than a new colour scheme.

The bad thing is there nothing under the hood that really wrong with it like windows Vista or ME.

Its solid stable and has some nice upgrades to it but not enough to actually get people to deal with the metro UI.

For business there just no reason at all to upgrade.

I read that you can not scroll from top to bottom with your mouse anymore, you have to move the page from left to right - something like that...no start bottom anymore. I think MS is trying to "capture two technologies in one upgrade", PC and tablets, they are more for tablets as they thing it's the one that will sale the most.

they didn't even update to media player 13. after the installation it now keeps prompting me to log into my Hotmail in order to load the consumer preview.

yeah, I was wondering the same thing. I hope that if they release a new consumer preview version, that they remove the need to log into Hotmail to load the consumer preview.

This whole world is gone social media. Using your Hotmail login is just the way MS has decided to make our lives "better" by introducing a horrible browser, bloatware filled search engine and other Microsoft sponsored garbage. Since most people use Facebook and the like the usage of MSN messenger has dropped dramatically. I didn't use my Hotmail login, I used my Gmail login and it worked fine for me.

I wont switch to 8 from 7 unless its on a tablet. But then again, why would you use windows on a tablet when Android and Mac have so much better tablet UIs.

aw crap. I just noticed that my lg cd/dvd drive e: has disappeared. its not listed in my computer/devices with removable storage and its not loading any cd and dvds. I contacted lg and they told me that installing windows 8 most likey caused drive e to stop working and there is nothing they can do. they also told me that their lg website isn't designed to scan, install and repair cd/dvd drives that stop working because of the windows 8 installation.

I've experienced a similar problem when upgrading vista or windows xp to a newer windows version.

A fix that you could try is this

Start Registry Editor (Hold down the Windows key + R, in the Run box type in regedit then click OK)

Find "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" (and "UpperFilters.bak" "LowerFilters.bak", if they exist) value under the following key in the registry, and delete it:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    Quit Registry Editor.

    Reboot.

if a new version of the consumer preview becomes available, please post it and let me know. perhaps, if I install a new version of the consumer preview, maybe it might fix the disappeared drive problem.
